Thread: Infocom-style Uru puzzles? | Forums

    I loved Elspet's post. Is it possible to submit ideas to the rulers of Uru: Ages Beyond Myst? There are many Infocom puzzles and stories that (I believe) would fit wonderfully in a Myst context. Here are some examples.

    Much though I loved the old Infocom games (and though URU is beautiful, there is still no graphics system that begins to compare with a good storyteller and the graphics engine between your ears), I don't expect interactive fiction style puzzles. IF games like Infocom's relied heavily on "inventory puzzles," finding objects that would help with different areas. A lot of it is information, too, like combinations and whatnot, and URU has those in abundance.

    Right now, URU looks as non-inventory-oriented as the earlier MYST games. I've got it up and running, by the way, and am journaling (in-cavern style) here.

    I hope our beloved Cyanists will continue to come up with MYST-type puzzles and keep dropping tantalizing hints about history, backstory, and storyline.

    Although a Certain Steam Vent in URU Prime reminded me a whole lot of a Certain Puzzle in Spellbreaker. Took me more than six months to finish Spellbreaker...

    Those who got the joke may be amused to learn that I call the "fireflies," Frotz Faeries.

    I loved the sarcasm built in to the old text-based games. Oh, and if you wanted to jump with a bunch of fireflies swirling about your head, you would succeed on the first try.
    And if you wanted to use a crate in the water as a bridge to get to the other side of a narrow waterway, it would work on the first try. As long as you had the right tools, you would succeed doing the stunts that were necessary to achieve your goals. No keyboard dexterity required. *Sigh*

    They didn't require keyboard dexterity, but they did have their frustrating moments. I remember many times in an Infocom game, trying to find the proper way to type something in order to accomplish something. Even if I knew exactly what needed to be done, sometimes it would take a while to say it in a way the parser understood.

    But, I used to spend hours on Infocom games. The Enchanter series was my favorite. It basically took the zork world and added magic.

    Hmm. Maybe I should go rezrov the gates to the Ancient City.
