I dunno. I have had the purple backed discs that wouldn't work in the past, but they were just on my PS1. I don't play enough games on my PS2 to have ran across a purple backed one for it.
However, I have read that there were several complaints about the colored discs not being read on the PS2. I don't know what to tell you on that, may just be a corrupted disc. Of the readings I have viewed most people declared it a bad disc and canned it, or took it back.
