Thread: How to make voice-over tracks? (Ironhand?) | Forums

  1. #1
Was trying to make a tutorial last night but was finding the file size rather heavy for several reasons:

    a) the voice files are created as .wav files yet I notice Ironhand's tracks use .ogg files. Will Loman do this conversion automatically?

    b) more importantly, I found the in trying to create small chunks of voice-over, I used Ctrl-0 and Shift-0 to begin and end the voice-over. Is this correct? Each time I pressed Shift-0 the screen froze for several seconds (while the plane/action continues) which made it virtually impossible to record the track properly.

Could someone give a quick how-to on how to make these voice recordings?

    Thanks.

I assume you have seen http://flankertraining.com/lomac/Making_Tracks.html
    you can also read though
    http://home.thezone.net/~parmstro/tracks.htm for some extra information.

I haven't fooled around with tracks for quite some time. I use to just change the bitrate of the wav's which in turn lower the file size. As for the .ogg files I'm not totally sure if LOMAC creats them although I believe it does.

Ctrl-0 and Shift-0 are the correct keys, you may notice a little slow down when these are pressed depending on your PC configuration. I don't think there is any way around it. Make sure your recording voice while your editing the track, atleast that way your not effecting the aircraft performance.

    Have fun!

Now I'm really confused. I replied to this (or a virtually identical message) last night and could have sworn there was a 2nd response from you. ??? Maybe I'm losing it.

The OGG files are the result of running my track and voice files through Skypat's LoMan utility for distribution. Using LoMan to install them on your computer converts the OGG files back to WAV files. Left to itself, LOMAC records, saves, and reads the voice files as WAV files.

The freezing you are experiencing is the result of (this is supposition on my part) the WAV file being written to the hard drive while a lot of other things are going on. As soon as your press Shift+0 to stop voice recording, you can also press Pause (S). That will give the sim time to save the file without you missing anything while you fly. Those pauses happen to me on occasion and that's how I handle it.

I've actually mapped the "Start voice recording" and "End voice recording" keys to buttons on my flightstick. Makes life a lot easier. Instead of finding two keys on the keyboard, I just press the corresponding button on my stick.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks Rich!

...and no, you're not mad...I could have sworn I'd posted this last night but it was nowhere to be seen this morning. Thought I'd had a few too many vinos...

Sorry Rick - forgot to ask...

How do you activate the mouse pointer so you can point to instruments etc. when recording?

Rich - last question (for this half-hour :-))...I can't seem to get the voice recorder working in anything other than "record track" mode. i.e. if I make a track and then go to Video Edit - I can't get the recording sign up with Control 0.

I'm pretty sure I managed it last night, but can't for the life of me work out what I'm now doing wrong. I want to create the track, modify the views with Video Edit, and then add voice with Video Edit. But no joy.
