Thread: Another RAM question :D | Forums

Doing a bit of an upgrade over the coming weeks, and on the shopping list is some new, faster RAM for when I grab my new mobo... I'm currently running on 2x256mb PC2100 sticks of unknown origin

I'm planning on going the whole hog and grabbing some Corsaire DDR400/PC3200, and I was just wondering if there is any difference in simply buying say one 512 stick or 2x256 sticks... does that make any difference at all?

by buying 2-256sticks instead u just wasted one of your memory slots where u could put another 512 stick into down the road. Obviously go with the 512stick

There will also be a, (admittedly very minimal) speed difference so just get the one stick of 512.

If your mobo is gonna support dual channel memory then you should get 2 512 chips

If your mobo doesn't support 400FSB, then going with PC3200 RAM will be a waste of money.

The memory does not have 400mhz FSB, it has 200mhz. The DDR400 is determined by 200mhz x2, because the RAM is Double Data Rate. And yes, you should buy only one stick of 512, so that you can later buy another and have a dual-channeled gigabyte of RAM. That's the most cost-effective way in the long run. As you can see in my signature, I have only one stick of 512, and will buy another in the future. Post me a link to your motherboard, or give me the name. I'll let you know what to do.

Not got it yet, but next month I should be grabbing this. It's all part of my slow month-by-month upgrade schedule

It's a real nice board. I've had one for about 2 months now and it runs extremely well.

I picked up two Kingston HyperX PC4000 modules for it and it's doing great. I would definitely suggest getting two 512's instead of 2 128's. I've seen this game take up to 600MB at one time on some of the SP levels.
