Thread: Solution for low fps! | Forums

  1. #1
When i installed RvS for first time i got smooth play except Nightvision googles /5fps/ and smoke granades/unplayable/. I maked only two things: opened RavenShield.ini /located in system folder of RvS/ and changed these settings:
    [Engine.GameEngine]
    CacheSizeMegs=256

    [D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice]
    UseVSync=False

Now im playing without problems on high settings 1024x768, and fps stayed between 50-80 even with NV googles and smoke granades. I hope this helps someone in the forum!
    Best Regards!

    Almost forgot my specs:
    Athlon XP 2000+ original settings
    256 DDR RAM
GeForce 2 GTS 64 Mb DDR
    53.04 Forceware drivers
    C-Media 5.1 sound
    Win 98/SE
    DirectX 9.0b

Yes, this added an extra 15 - 20 fps to my game.
    before: 20
    now: 40

but still getting around 10 or so when I'm outside on "Stolen flame"

And that's not enough on the following system:
    P4 1,8 GHz
    Radeon 9600 Pro
    768 MB RDRAM

Alas, this does nothing to actually FIX the FSAA/Nitevision bug that has been ingrained into RvS from the moment of it's conception. It used to be that as soon as you turned on nitevision (if you had FSAA enabled) your FPS would drop to 10 or lower. Since the newer patches, they haven't fixed the bug. Only changed it. Now when you turn on nitevision with FSAA enabled, you keep your FPS. But the game somehow 'shuts off' your FSAA completely until you reload or change levels or something. I wish the UBI people would stop spending our money and just fix the game....

Yeah, trying to run this game with FSAA is doable until you turn on the NVGs or see smoke - frame rates take a serious dump. But it's a moot point (always wanted to say that - whatever it means) anyway as any Catalysts over 3.6 (?) don't agree with RvS regarding AA.

Erik, I would have thought your system would do better with RvS. My guess would be that your cpu is holding you back - don't think it could be the 9600Pro. Are you running at 1024x768 res.? And lowering some settings to Medium?

I've got a bit of a booty-kicking rig and I can't run FSAA. I just run RvS at 1280x1024 and it looks sweet.

I'm running 1024*768 with everything set to medium or low, (medium textures, low detailed terrorists and low shadow settings) also "low detailed smoke"
I've tried setting it to 800*600 but to no avail.

It may be my processor but still.
Ravenshield was released 21/03/2003 (21 of mars 2003),the Radeon 9800 was not even released then, and an 1,8 GHz Pentium 4 was still somewhat "state of the art"

    And not to forget:
    Recommended System Specifications
    Windowsâ® XP Professional
1.3 GHz Pentium 4, AMD Athlon, or equivalent
    512 MB RAM
128 MB DirectX 8.1 compatible 3D video card ***(supported chipsets listed below)
    High Speed Internet connection (Cable/DSL)

FSAA?? what is that? (Front Side Anti Aircraft)?

It seems that I have abit better system than your first, and about 1/2 of the processor and 2/3 of your graphicscard on the second.

I don't understand what you mean by
    "high aa as off gl"
    gl is Good luck right?

I hear ya, Erik about the recommended sys requirements. Sounds like you've tried everything. One thing I would try is to disable sound (I think in the .ini file) and then see what frames you get. There have some posts about sound causing major hits in RvS.

FSAA = full screen anti-aliasing (usually referred to as AA)
AF = the usual abbreviation for anisotropic filtering

AA causes a serious performance hit while AF usually does not (or is much less). Yeah, GL means good luck. I never saw that until I came here. I thought everyone was talking about grenade launchers!
