My Norton Anti-Virus 2002 never manages to detect it and it's throwing pop-up adds at me and causing my computer to run shower than usually when I try to play games. Sometimes when I'm on the net, my computer gets an error out of nowhere.

I've been frequenting network54.com, which is a webpage full of 1,000 different message boards. At one particular forum there, people were complaining about some spyware program called Gain or Gator which manage to get into the board as well as in the computers of some of its visitors.

If Norton isn't picking it up, and your virus defs are current, it probably isn't a virus. More likely, it's spyware (which is what Gator and Comet Cursor are). There are a few good spyware killers out there.
Spybot Search and Destroy - security.kolla.de
Ad-Aware - www.lavasoft.nu
If you are indescriminate about what sites you surf to and often click "yes" to those little gray boxes that pop up saying "You must have this to view this page!!! It's cool!!!" then you've probably got a lot of spyware on your system you're not aware of. Someone I know ran one of the above cleaners and came up with (I kid you not) 263 hits. Then he ran another one and found another 30 or so (any one spyware remover will get most of them, but you should run at least two to make sure you get all of them).

Damn!
Just exactly one minute ago, I got a norton anivirus message center message saying that I have the "Trojan.ByteVerify" virus
But I clicked on the link provided by Norton, and this site showed up:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com...yteverify.html
This might help for others who have the virus
