LOL 3 votes...33% for each. Anyhow, I think most, if not all of us would like to have complete control over the sub leaving port, as well as all the way to the patrol zone, and back. But since we all know that is not going to happen no matter how much we cry about it at this point, a cinematic is better than nothing and could still be kinda cool if done right and different each time.(depending on the sub you are sailing, place your are leaving, time of day, weather, ect...)
EDIT: ****!! I ment to vote for number 3. That seems like the best choice at this point.
EDIT2: I didnt know **** was a bad word.
BTW the word i used was parc spelled backwards
"I don't ask no questions, they don't tell me no lies."
I voted for #3-both, because while I do like driving the boat in and out of port I also really like the little "farewell" in AOD with the band playing and the crowds waving, and I just don't see that happening with the full control option.
As to bad words, don't forget the earlier thread about circular torpedoes, in which one poster called Admiral O'Kane "****ie" because the board also sees **** as a bad word.

It wouldn't bother me if they had just really good 2D backgrounds with band music inside the pens. Or standing on the docks.
if i can control my boat from pen to pen, i wouldn't care if all the ports in the game we nice 2D backgrounds.

In this day of age we should have full 3d modeled harbours. As i said before the dev team has made the game like this so they dont have to do all the hardwork, which involves making harbours and coastlines. Having just a 2d screen sounds realy cheap, 2d screens fine for subsims back on your 486, but not now.
Steering into the port would only make sense, if you are free to go where ever you want during the campaign.
If that would be the case, I'd like to steer the boat back into save harbor. But since the u-boats usually were towed into the bunkers, it would be perfectly okay to end the simulation, when you're close to them.
AFTER THAT, I'd personally like an animation of the boat, greeted by cheering personell and families, showing the sub with it's damages and showing the flags on the lines from the turret to astern, how many ships and what types were sunk on the mission.

Even if the SH3 developer are not able to do this, the SH2 Modders are on the route, look here .
That harbor is a blast!! It would be damn cool to have the real Wilhelmshaven harbor... remember old Ports of Call? You'd just do the same with your sub . The SH2 ports are just simple and generic. Having full control in the port just adds to the atmoshpere. Cinematics was and old technique to give some feeling which graphics couldn't do. Now it can. More and more games have sequences in ingame graphics instead of cinematics. And then they jsut can give us the control. Driving out of the pen, through all the harbor parts would just be stunning. You'd have tons of fun with the game before your first encounter, and you've a place in the sim where you feel safe later on. This is your home. As you arrive there, and drive back into the port, you just know you're back, you made it home in one piece. Also the 3D engine could display some ppl in the port that are happy that you made it back, musicians playing marches which can be heard realistically thanks to modern sound techniques. All this is possible to some extent today. They just need to make it ; and maybe the modders could do it, if it's not in the box. Or they could make a scenery addon and sell it later.
i agree on the fact that a 2-d animation is really cheep . it was cool on AOD but they had no choice becuase there war no external view and stuff . i mean if they stick to this animation of leaving port , then i,m sure there wont be any coastlines either.
