I'm not a 9600XT owner but I own a 9700Pro which performs spectacularly well in RvS. I know my experience isn't shared by all but the 9600XT is a fantastic card in all the reviews I've read and its the fatest mid-range card you can buy. Its still not as fast as a 9700Pro and certainly not with a 9800Pro, or a 9800XT but its still quite fast and quite affordable in comparison and it still has all the bells and wistles.

In RvS I get a solid average around 60FPS (I can max out at 85FPS - maximum refresh rate) and I occasionally drop to 10 fps but that almost never happens and is never noticeable for me. Infact in RvS with my latest motherboard drivers, ATI's Catalyst 4.1, and my system running nicely I have almost no noticeable performance degredation no matter what is happening on screen.

You should probably be getting similar FPS to what I am getting provided several things:

    1) You have GOOD components in your system (ie. generally well recognized brand names like ASUS, MSI, Abit, etc.)
    2) You run your Windows install cleanly and utilize a number of tweaks (either manual or through various tweak software available).
    3) You know how to tweak your video card settings (which is relatively easy) to find the maximum compromise between image quality and performance (if I really want to I can slow this card down to 10fps by maxing the features - but its not worth it)
    4) If you own a Anti-Virus program - run it in passive mode without active scanning to improve performance
    5) The components in your computer are upto spec (ie. if you buy a 9600XT and you throw it in a PIII 733 - its not going to make much difference)

Remember that video card is but one component. Processor and RAM matter just as much and these days so does the motherboard and the chipset that it uses. After that even the sound card bears a result on performance...so be aware, do some research, check out the testing (http://www.tomshardware.com and www.hardocp.com ), and be an informed consumer.

Heya Notorious, i got the 9600xt 128 meg version i was told it has faster memory then the 256 just to let you know also u can go to www.rage3d.net to get more answers. To answer your question about fps i get in the 80's 90's on maps depending which ones they are in fire fights about 50-60 same with smoke, only issues is with AA for some reason everytime your shot it freezes for a split second with it off it runs fine hope that helps some.

Sorry, what i mean is when your shot it freezes for a split second, somtimes if your lucky to survive. It doesn't happen again until the next round it's kinda annoying i believe most people turn AA off.

what u can do is overclock the 9600 Pro and voila, u have a 9600XT. the XT versions of the 9600 and 9800 just have a higher clock speed. u do realize that, right? u can save a crapload of dough that way.

Zero sniper... By the same token (or in fact, by a somewhat more convenient token), you can get ATIs "Overdrive" to automatically overclock your Radeon 9600XT for you. You can expect performance levels approaching the Radeon9800 SE if you have a decent fan or two (or 3 or 4) in your system.

You should consider the Radeon9600pro if you are on a "tight" budget, but if not, you can always enjoy the Radeon9600XTs slight increase in clockspeed, and can join the controversial "HL2 token" race.

Why don't you have that OICW as an image in your sig. Zero?
