Thread: What should I do (for a PC)? | Forums

Okay, I'm buying a new computer real soon. Here are the specs:

Intel 875 chipset
350 watt PSU
WinXP Home
2.8 GHz 800 MHz FSB w/ HT
Geforce FX 5600 Ultra
1024 MB RAM
Audigy 2
2 x SATA 80 GB (RAID 0)
DVD drive
CD-RW (48/24/48)
Floppy (of course)

Here's the tricky part.

If I built it myself: ~$1900

If I buy from falcon-northwest: $2900

With Falcon-NW, I get a custom painted case, and all the cords inside the case would be neatly routed. But I cannot decide if that justifies 1000.

The paint job really means a lot to me, so I can't decide. It's a lot of money, but it would be really, really cool. What do you guys think I should do?

My self personally would build my own(i have myself) and save money,Maybe you could paint(carefully!) the case yourself?,I myself wouldnt bother lashing out extra money for a painted case,But if you like it go for it!
I have seen some superb looking neon case's.
Good luck on what you decide.

Build your own.

A thousand dollars is a lot of money, dude. At least, it is to me. Even if the case is the sweetest looking thing ever and has hand-carved, explicit, karma-sutra pictures modelled by Cameron Diaz, sooner or later you will just stop staring and it becomes backround. Not worth $1K of your hard-earned cash.

Spend a thousand dollars on beer, or buy yourself a really nice gun. Do anything except spend it on a case.

N.B. I'd probably spend $1000 on a case like that which I described, but would settle for nothing less. *shrug*

$1000 for a painted case? That's just pathetic. What is wrong with a normal grey case that could save you money? Why does a painted case mean a lot to you?

Build it yourself.
With about 5 dollars worth of gear, you can neatly organize your cables (Some computer magazine came out this month or last month) that compared the falcon to the Alienware to another....) Showed all the cases and had an article on how to go about organizing your cables. Price of the magazine was 5.00.
If you have money to toss away... go ahead and buy the Falcon. If you are just looking for a good computer build one yourself and then mod the case or buy a modded case.
1000 is a lot for a paint job that will be on a computer that will be 'old' in a year or two... and most likely you will still be paying on it.

Uh. Yeah. It was MaximumPC Oct 2002. (Sorry I just got it last week... It actually came out a while ago. Despite their best efforts... Mail is still a problem here.

They compare the Alienware Area-51, Voodoo EGAD, and Falcon NW Mach V Exotix. Case comparisons, performance, etc.

In addition they had an article on a step by step guide for Cable organization (For neatness and better Air flow).

Sorry for getting you pumped up over an old magazine, but maybe you can search for it somehow... Old book shop, internet...

You can paint it yourself very easily.

1) Remove the old paint.

2) Prime

3) Paint

4) Clearcoat

All of the above is available in spray paint style cans, and it looks decent if you do it right. 30 bucks, maybe. And if you don't like it you can do it all again. For the paint removal, best thing is to find a freind with a sandblaster and take that crud off. You'll be all set. And you'll save a grand

Good luck.
