Thread: How to tell between friend or foe on radar? | Forums

  1. #1
So far my understanding is that when i use BVR mode (for both American and Russian planes) all radar contacts are automatically identified as either friendly or enemy. However, when i use the WVR modes all contacts are considered hostile.

I used to play Jane's F-15 and in that game i could either send an IFF squawk to all radar contacts when i pressed a button, or set it to automatically send one when i locked on to a contact.

Is there something similar that i can do in this game (cant seem to find a key for it in the keycard)? or is there no way to tell between friend or foe on the radar when i use the within visual range modes?

Well it depends on what jets the friendlies are flying. You should see what you have locked up on radar f15 or s27

A Squawking IFF capability would be interesting in this sim.

    thanks for the quick replies

lol...i did some testing and i found that:

the F-15's WVR modes will all distinguish friend or foe(both by the contact icons as well as by identifying the type of aircraft targetted), regardless of the missile selected.

with the Russian jets, if you have a semi-active or active radar missile selected, the target will be identified, but if your current weapon is IR, then the target will not be identified (ie. will always be hostile)

interestingly, if you first selected a radar-guided missile and identified the target as friendly, you can then switch to a IR missile and the target will remain friendly as long as you dont change modes.

so are these the only ways to identify on radar whether contacts are friend or foe? (is this the way it is in real life?)

oh yeah...and something else i was wondering is... i know i can jettison external fuel tanks, but is there a way to jettison some internal fuel to prepare for a dogfight? (and is it realistic to be able to jettison internal fuel?)

Raptor, [Ctrl-R] will allow you to jettison internal fuel. Just hitting [Ctrl-R] will allow a spritz of fuel, Hit and hold-down [Ctrl-R] will allow the fuel to flow, then release [Ctrl-R] to stop the fuel flow. Check it out with a view of your plane in [F2].

Note [Ctrl-R] will allow you to re-fuel when the plane is stopped on the ground. [Ctrl-R] will allow you to dump fuel from internal tanks when in the air.

On Russian aircraft IFF is not related to the missle selected. It depends on the sensor system selected. With a target locked by radar you get IFF, with EOS you do not.

But....there is a bug. You actually do get IFF with EOS. On the HUD, with EOS or radar, you get IFF before you lock the target. Friends show as two bars, bandits as one. As soon as you lock the target it shows as a bandit (no matter which it is).

you have easy radar on? I can target my buddies just fine. During air refuling I usually target my tanker so I get a better idea of what he is doing while I'm trying to dock with him.
