Thread: Can't change the Mohawk.w32 file | Forums

  1. #1
    OK (sigh)

Trying to run Riven in Win xp. Finally found QT3, installed it, and tried every compatibility setting, and it still wont run. The best i can get is the screen changing to black, then back to my desktop 3 seconds later.

I even tried turning off all video and sound acceleration.

I found a thread explaining that a change to the mohawk.w32 file is the critical step. So I opened it up with notepad, made the changes, BUT IT WONT LET ME SAVE.

It says "Cannot create the C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Riven\mohawk.w32 file. Make sure taht the path and file name are correct"

Strange cuz all i did was open in notepad, make 2 changes, and try to save the program thats already there.

Which brings up another point. When I tried to install the patch 2.0, it couldn't recognize Riven as already being installed on my computer. I had to manually direct it to the folder. I don't know if this is related but maybe someone can shed seom light on the subject.

    Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

    chiroguy,

The version of Riven I play (v1.0 for the Mac) is on CDs, and is copyrighted 1997. It works fine with Apple QuickTime v 6.0.3 on my PowerMac. I don't think the version of QT is relevant unless it is lower than v 2.5, in which case it should be updated. The User's Manual for this version states that Riven is compatible with Windows 95. Perhaps if you are running under WinXP you need to choose emulation of Win95? Have you tried that?

Also, FWIW, here is a readout from HexEdit of my (unmodified) "mohawk.ppc" file, which may or may not correspond to your "mohawk.w32" file. You may find it interesting, or not...

    ; Riven Mohawk.ppc

I'm not sure where we're going with this, but Bill's the Mac man around here and since QuickTime is from Mac's brother Apple, I figured I'd follow his lead and show you what my Mohawk.w32 file looks like as installed on XP Professional. I never had to mess with compatibility modes or altering files, as I just installed and began playing it.

Here's the catch though; mine is the original edition of Riven from 1997.

I take it from the location of your Mohawk file chiroguy, that you've got the 10th Anniversary Edition that was supposed to have been ported (updated) to run (or run better) on XP. Unfortunately the list of those waiting for a patch for the recent Riven is growing.

Good luck and let us know what happens, will you?

Yeah as I noted, I've tried every compatibility setting (95, 98 etc.),and I now have QT3 installed (which IS needed for Riven DVD according to numerous forums).

Yes my version is from the new anniversary edition. BTW: is Riven DVD different than the Riven Anniversary edition that I have (which is also on a DVD format)

Anyways, the location of the Mohawk.32 file is in the Riven directory.

So if I can't change the Mohawk.32 file, I dont know what else to do...kinda frustrating =(

A couple of things that will prevent you from editing a file:

It's read only, in which case you just need to uncheck that box under properties. Probably a good idea to return the attribute when finished.

It's a file being used by or registered to the system. If it's being used by the system you would get something like "access denied" or "unable to process, file busied by system" when trying to alter it. If it's a registered file, you can usually modify it by removing the file extension (.w32 in this case) before opening to edit and then replacing the extension after saving the changes.

Heuris you were right, it was read-only. Thanks for the tip.

Well I've exhausted all my options. I've done the QT3 thing, the windows compatibility thing, and the Mohawk file thing.

    Still a no-go.

Hopefully best buy will except and exchange. I have no idea when a patch for Riven will come out.

Thanks anyone for all your help. If you guys have any more solutions, feel free to post =)

What a shame. The best of the Myst trilogy thus far, and they broke it.

IMHO it would be worth exchanging that DVD for the standalone Riven that comes on 5 CD's, if it's available.

Sorry chiroguy. If I had that DVD I might be able to figure it out, but I don't.

Good luck and thanks for your feedback!

chiroguy, I never did ask you if you had seen the post by AmO "Riven DVD works on Windows 2000". It's only a few down from this one and might help you.
