Buying a new comp.I can afford about 1500.00 and wanted 2 know what 2 buy. P4 or AMD? are 64bit processors over rated? Radeon or GeForce? 128 -256? Hardrive size? Should i run 2 or is 1 o.k? I only play games like Il-2, F1 racing and call of duty. I don't want to spend extra dough if i don't have too. Right now i have a 1.6 P4 so any things gotta be better!!!

1.6 aint too bad m8. I would be tempted to wait and see what happens regarding Intels next gen chips and the athlon 64's, as the new 64 bitters are still quite expensive.

If you REALLY want to upgrade then I would either get a Pentium with hyper threading or a Athlon 64/FX51/FX53. And you should be able to get one of the new generation of graphics cards too. The GF 6800 has just come out and a few other GF 6's should be out soon. OR you could get yourself a Radeon 9800 pro pretty cheap now. The GF 5900 XT is good value for money too. But rememeber that these will soon be old generation cards.

The choke point seems to be FSB these days (in my opinion of course) and Intel seems to have the edge for the moment. Ask smart people (not me) which motherboard to get because it will dictate how far you can go with eventual upgrades and overclocking.

According to both the sales department and technical support at Western Digital, 1 hard drive is best for general gaming. RAID arrays come into play when you host. Get a small, fast hard drive with at least 8 MB of cache. The Western Digital 10,000 R.P.M. Raptor hard drive fills this bill easily. You can get it at newegg for about $107.00 U.S.

I'd wait on spending big bucks for the new nVidia card because it is expensive and further improvements will come soon to the video card market. I'd get an ATI 9800 Pro that IS NOT the SE version because it only has 4 pixel pipelines.

Actually, I'd wait a while on upgrading from scratch. Postum diagnosis and we'll see what we can do with your present system on the cheap to keep you in good performance for a while longer until the "next generation" thing in hardware becomes more clear.

I'd agree with Luckyboy and Xiao.. Patience may be a better option, I've got some cash put away for a new system, but I'm going to sit on it for a while longer with a view to buying a new system closer to (for) BOB. A Dxiag posted here will get you some great advice off some pretty knowledgeable people as to decent teaks you can perform.

I run a 1.6 and boosting my RAM was a really big improvement, also I formatted and reinstalled windows a couple of weeks ago, and my system performace has never been better. It's amazing how much crap your system can get clogged up with over a year or so, regular cleaning (defragmenting, removing unwanted files and programmes that are rarely used), will do it the world of good too.

Apologies if you know all that and just want a new system.

leaddude's got it exactly right here. I respect those who make the most of what they've got. Any rich teenager can buy the latest and greatest that will be replaced in 3 months with the newer latest and greatest... and for what, a higher benchmark score? I don't play benchmarks. I play IL-2 FB ACE!!! If the money is not playdough to you (and from your post I suspect so) you will want to see what you can do to upgrade your current PC. I bet you can upgrade your microprocessor to a 2.4 GHz unit that would have twice the cache as your current chip. IL-2 FB is very CPU and RAM limited as well as taxing the video card. Post that diagnosis and we'll see what we can do to help you get a good game in while keeping those extra Zloty's in your pocket!

Right now as far as whats out on the market the best I would say is within the P4 and the 64bits both are doing very good. Some of my squad members are using the P4 3Ghz including myself and they are running great. On the other hand one members has just built his own 64bit and he is absolutely loving it.
As far as G force or ATI it just depends on what you want.
GForce reviews both on sites and from people I know who have them say they are best for running 1st person shooters
ATI reviews from both types of sources show that they are better for flight sims.
If you want a pretty good computer at a decent price that is manufactured go with a Dell, otherwise build it from scratch.
