Thread: 1024 ram now only shows 750? | Forums

Anyone know how to regain lost ram? I have a new AMD 3000xp Windows XP. What programs can safely be closed in Windows to get some memory back? Had a full 1024 for a couple weeks then all of a sudden 750. I've run Spybot etc. and can find no viruses. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

How much physical RAM is there in total in your system? Where does it show 750 instead of 1024?

1024 MB sounds suspiciously like the total amount of RAM, which you can obviously never have all available after WinXP has loaded. I myself have 1024 MB total physical memory installed on my system and about 760-800 MB available after WinXP has loaded, which sounds pretty much like the situation you described...

When your PC boots you see a POST screen (Power On Self Test ) does it show the full 1024 there?

When you right click 'My Computer' in XP on the desktop, select properties does it show 1Gb there?

If no to either/both (well if it's no to the first it'll be no to the second but second is easier to do ) then you may have a loose RAM module, if you RAM includes 2 256Mb modules.

Take the cover off, ground yourself (I personally leave the power lead in - but you have to be totally sure the system is powered down and I take no responsibility - as this will ground the chassis) and pop and reset each DIMM in turn.

If this fails to correct the issue you

    a. Only ever had 768 Mb of ram

    b. You have a DIMM/Mobo failure

If you are referring to available RAM, however, once windows has started then this is normal! You will never have the full 1024 available as XP will be loaded into memory space along with any other utils/apps.
