Fluorescent wakes are described many times in book's stories...........

I soupose they are due to the bioluminiscense of plancton criatures...........

I had seen it many times diving at night, when you make a perturbation on the plancton ....... it generates a blue fluorescent light........

Ship and torpedo propellers produce the same effect..............

Would be great to have this effect modelated in night combats...............

    Thank a lot Jeroen..........

    Very impresive........

I was at night at sea, but I never give attention to this effect, may be due the bright lights of the boat........

But I like too much night dive, normally... in all night dive, the group coordinates at a stablished order to switch off all lights and then move strong and quickly the fins..........

The little animals when perturved, swichs on their bioluminiscence......... a wonderful and beautiful spectacle.............

Will be great to have this effect modelated.........

    Redwine,
I thought that this was predominately a warm water occurrence?

Phosphorescent wakes are a common phenomenon and were seen througout WW2. Plantkton glows at night when disturbed. I found this excerpt:

quote:
Admiral Lord Mountevans, writing after the war, captured the atmosphere and danger of the convoys:

"Those of us who have escorted convoys in either of the great Wars can never forget the days and especially the nights spent in company with those slow-moving squadron of iron tramps - the wisps of smoke from their funnels, the phosphorescent wakes, the metallic clang of iron doors at the end of the night watches which told us that the Merchant Service firemen were coming up after four hours in the heated engine rooms, or boiler rooms, where they had run the gauntlet of torpedo or mine for perhaps half the years of the war. I remember so often thinking that those in the engine rooms, if they were torpedoed, would probably be drowned before they reached the engine room steps..."5
