Thread: Sandbox questions, possible bugs | Forums

1. #1
I've been fiddling with Sandbox for about a week now. I figured out several things on my own, and several more from reading threads here. But I've come up with a couple questions that I can't seem to find answers for:

1) On one of my maps, when I select Layer Painter mode, there are no layers listed in the list box, so I can't paint anything. I have all my texture layers set up, and the surface map generated. Any ideas as to why nothing would show up in Layer Painter mode?

2) Is there a maximum setting for the vegetation density? I understand that it's an inverse proportion, meaning that a setting of 10 equates to 1 object for every 10 map units. But it seems if I set it above 10 or so, nothing gets placed when I go to paint it on. Settings below that are just too dense for things like trees. Especially if I want to place several different kinds at once.

3) How do I set up what weapons kit the player has when I select "Game | Switch to Game"?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Sadly, I can only answer question # 1.

ANSWER: Chose a texture in the Texture tab and uncheck auto-generate texture(or something like that). Then go to Environment>Layer Painter and you will see the name of the texture layer, click on that and press Paint Layer(or something) and paint away. Have Fun!

Ah, OK, that actually makes sense. I think the option is "Auto Generate Mask", though. Thanks!

What do you mean game|siwwtch game??

Setting the kit for the beginning of the round, you goto "edit equipment packs", edit what gear you want the player to start with, then goto properties and select the equipment pack you made.. usually you name the equipment pack the same as the type of level your building ie: "ffa" "tdm" "assault".

Poseidon88,
AFAICT:

1) -> What Gordie mentions. You should be a ware that there seem to be 2 sets of textures related to Terrain. Those used with "Generate" e.g. automatically applied for certain height ranged... and textures pertaining to Painting. By default there are no textures for painting. Thus Gordies tip.

2) -> I noted that if you place vegetation Trees, then these will not let you place them closer than the size of the entity. Thus your limitation. Possibly you can manipulate this to some degree by using a smaller grid, like 0.125.

3) -> The manual explains this for multiplayer. Just read up on that there.

If you select the "Game" menu and then "Switch to Game" (I think that's right, I'm posting from work, so I can't check) it switches the editor to game mode and starts the player at the current camera position (or at the player start, based on an option). You can also press Ctrl-G to do this. It's very useful for testing map features without leaving the editor. What I want to know is how to set the default weapon kit for this mode.

Except that I don't want them closer, I want them further apart. If I set the density to 10, it will place 1 tree per 10 grid units, or at least this is my understanding from the manual. That's fine, and it seems to work, but to me the trees are much too close together. Well, say I want to set it to 20, so I have 1 per 20 units. But when I go to paint them on, nothing happens. I'm probably doing something stupid or wrong, but I don't know what.

I'll check the manual for the info on weapon kits. Thanks!

Well, that makes 2 of us that are possibly being stupid. I've notice this as well, and it really sucks cuz the documentation simply uses 10 as an example of a lesser dense planting - but it don't specify a cap/max on that value, and nothing above 20 seems to work, no matter what radius your brush is.

If anyone has key to this issue, please, share it here.

about the vegetation painting- make sure your brush size is large enough to accomodate the density setting, eg. if your density is 10, make the brush is at least 10 units in diameter (because there's random placement involved when veg painting which needs space to work).

so, if your veg isn't painting, just keep hitting the numpad '+' key til it does.

edit: just saw your comment about anything above 20 not working. i managed to get some plants to paint at a density of 30 here with a v large brush, but one thing that stopped it working initially was the elevation limiter. try dropping that to zero so you can work underwater & with a lowered water level.
