I've finally found my way into the large golden dome. Also, I've read other postings about a marble puzzle that must be solved to generate power (I think). However, despite making my way around for hours within and around the dome, I have yet to discover WHERE the generator room is to be able to even get to the marble puzzle. Any nudge in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Have you been to the other islands yet? Gone into the steam room under the rotating room? Gone for a long walk to get into the top of the gold dome?
There is so much to see and do in order to get the power turned on. That is near the end of the story.
A clue for getting power turned on is that the special machine is above the walk from the rotating room to the gold dome.
Keep traveling and taking lots of notes about numbers, colors, sounds, locations, etc.

Thanks for the tip. Finally found out how to get to the marble puzzle. I think I know the islands of Riven better than my own back yard. I'm playing around with the marbles and think I've figured out their correct location without much success. However, I still haven't found my way to the place where Catherine's journal is supposedly hidden. I'm not sure whether I need Catherine's journal before I proceed to solve the marble puzzle.
You need to find the grid position from the place with the topographical machine. I don't remember the name of the island but it has the island shapes on the one side and a lake with a round building in the center.
Go below and you will find a place that shows colors and numbers.
Have you been to the prison island? The place that looks like a big globe in the middle of the lake. You need to push stones down to get there so you need numbers and animals to fix that up.
Thanks. I've not been to prison island yet. I pushed around some stones, but all it revealed was an inactive linking book. Perhaps I missed something else?
It has been a while since I played. I think the stones are based on animals, bugs, etc., linked to numbers and sounds. The pictures and sounds will help you choose which and the numbers will tell you the sequence. You will need 5 stones in the correct sequence to get things working.
Wow...I really feel silly. I had seen what I needed, but was reluctant to use the linking book because I was a bit paranoid about what would happen after Myst and Exile links left me up a creek. Now have what I need to proceed to the marble puzzle.
