    OK:
    maybe this will help, maybe.
I went through HE*L with this game after I upgraded from an Nvidia Geforce 4 TI 4200 TO an Nvidia GeForce FX 5950 Ultra. It kept CRASHING TO DESKTOP after a random amount of time of playing. to keep this short, here's what worked (perfectly) for me:
I use a program called Power Strip available here:
    http://entechtaiwan.net/util/ps.shtm
and, using Power Strip, I "turned down" my Graphics Cards Engine and Memory Clocks. The factory settings for MY FX 5950 Ultra are:
    Engine Clock: 475Mhz
    Memory Clock: 950Mhz
I "turned down" the clocks to the following:
    Engine Clock: 440Mhz
    Memory Clock: 880Mhz
I don't know if it matters, but I kept the Memory Clock exactly 2 times that of the Engine Clock. Your card's clock settings from factory will probably be different than mine, so use CAUTION when playing around with clock settings. All I can say is, I tried several dozen different suggestions, not one worked. Then, I read, in this very forum, about "memory timings" and "clock speeds" and such. I can't change any settings in my BIOS with regards to memory timings, so I thought, what the heck, I'll lower my Video Cards clocks and see if it helps. And, what do you know, now Far Cry AND a couple of other games are working perfectly for HOURS without so much as even a hicup. This worked for me, and it may for you too. Just be aware:
NEVER over-clock ANYTHING unless you know what you are doing. I got the word directly from my Vid card tech support that UNDERCLOCKING (NOT overclocking) won't hurt anything, BUT OVERCLOCKING wil void warranty AND may damage your card. I hope this helps, underclocking has made my life a whole lot better and I have had very little (if any) lesser performance. And, by the way, I am still using the 56.72 drivers and still NO problems. I'd say give the under-clocking a try, it may help and definitely shouldn't hurt any thing. Good luck and happy gaming.

PS: I know I shouldn't HAVE to "underclock" and the Manufacturer is willing to send me a new Vid card, but I am eligible to upgrade to a 6800 Ultra and only have to pay shipping, once those cards are available, so I am waiting for that. At the moment, underclocking has all of my "problem games" working flawlessly and I am content with this "fix" for now.

A follow-up to desktop crashing in my system...tried all the tweaks and still happened..gave up played another game that NEVER crashed and, it did...aha...so, figured it was maybe heat/power/ram leak..

Tried a free utility from PC World, FreeRam XPPro, and, low and behold, it made a few adjustments, and the game now is running like a jewel..
May be a short-term fix, but, it did something...as I meticulously close all programs, vscans, etc..yet, it found a way...

So, wanted to offer that for anyone interested...thanks for your replies and help...
