Last Update: August 20th

NOTE: Every information inside this FAQ is subject to change and is based on the facts about the game released so far by Ubisoft. Changes (news) are marked with a yellow * inside the 'headline'!

I'll try to update the FAQ as soon as any Infos about the Game are released. However please keep in mind, that Infos can be bad or good in someones opinion so please don't kill the Messenger and stick to the facts instead.

Ok, the most important thing first: In the latest trailer I hear a new voice for Sam, so I guess Ironside will no longer reprise his role as Sam Fisher? How could you do that? That's totally gonna ruin the entire SP game!*
Woah...slow down! There is no "new voice" for our uncle Sam and the voice you've heard was nothing else than a simple placeholder. The trailer had to be out before or at least during E3 and everything was recorded (with Ironside) but then the dialogue script has been changed and Ironside wasn't available at this time, so with E3 around the corner, Ubi had to improvise. I repeat: Ironside is still in. He's still Sam Fisher and will probably keep being Sam 'til he no longer wants to. I assure you, Ubisoft is very aware of how important Ironside is for the character of Sam Fisher.

Phew....I'm relieved. What about the other voices?*
Well, when it comes to the core crew, you'll be glad to hear everyone is there you'd expect. Just to name 3 of the most important:

Sam Fisher: Michael Ironside (SC1,SCPT,SCCT)
Irving Lambert: Don Jordan (SC1, SCCT)
Anna Grimsdottir: Claudia Besso (SC1, SCCT)

What about Francis Cohen?*
Cohen's appearence inside the game has not yet been confirmed, so 'til we hear something different, she (unfortunately) should be considered as "not in the game" which is a bit sad, if you ask me because she's a very interessting Sam - like character with the same wonderful sense humour.

Ok, since we got that out of the way, spill the beans! Who is creating Double Agent?
Depends, Ubisoft Shanghai is working on the PC & XBox 360 Version (the Xbox360 / PC version is often referred to as "next-gen"), Ubisoft Montreal will take care of the XBox, Gamecube & PS2 Version ("current-gen") while Annecy will be reponsible for the SvM multiplayer mode and Milan for the SvS multiplayer.

Which Engine is used?
From all we know at present time the next-Gen Version developed by Ubisoft Shanghai is going to use a multithreaded Version of the SCX Engine we've seen in Chaos Theory's Single Player / Coop Mode while Ubisoft Montreal is going to use the same SCX Version they used in Chaos Theory for the Current-Gen Versions.

Will the PC version share the same visual beauty the XBox360 has to offer?*
According to the latest news, it'll visually be the same and also share some of the XBox360 features.

When will it be available?
This Winter. According to Ubisoft currently October 19th. Of course delays are always possible if you're working on something that's brandnew because you can always stumble over unexpected Problems, that need to be solved.

Sounds good, but what kind of Multiplayer are we going to get? Will the Versus be back?
Yep, the Versus will be back, however you won't see the Argus Mercs again, instead you'll have to fight 3 VS 3 (optional) that means 3 Spies VS 3 Upsilion Forces (like the Mercs) but the SvM Versus will not be available on all Systems. Current-Gen Gamers are going to get the Spy VS Spy Multiplayer. More about all of that later in this FAQ.

You've mentioned SCCT's very innovative Coop part, can we expect to see it's return in Double Agent?
Yes and no. Actually Coop will be part of the game, however while on the "current gen" plattforms (like the XBox for example), it'll be the same it has been in SCCT, the "next gen" versions (XBox360 / PC) will only get a Coop sub-mode. That means it's only a portion of the Spies VS Mercenaries mode. You'll be able to take on 3 Upsilion Forces (AI driven) with 2 of your friends but it won't come with it's own story like in SCCT.

Wait, what exactly means "heavily advanced AI"?
The AI will now replace broken lightbulbs, switch one lights etc., it won't be easy to catch them by shooting the lights. However that wouldn't be that great, right? But what I mean with heavily advanced AI is that you have to break out of the Prison together with Jaime and Jaime's AI is so advanced you won't believe it! You'll use him as Distraction and then sneak up on the Guards and grab them, get their Weapon etc. or simply sneak past them! He'll help you doing some coop Moves and you'll help him up etc. - as I said the AI is much more advanced in SCDA. However these Single Player Coop Missions won't be that rare in SCDA, in fact you'll have "a few" more Missions in which you won't be alone and you'll need your AI buddy's help for example Enrica's oder Jamie Washington's, Hisham's etc.

What can you tell me about Splinter Cell Double Agent's Single Player Storyline?
Well it takes place in 2008. After Sam's Daughter Sarah Fisher died in a car accident, Fisher seems to be a broken man as he gets the message during a mission in Iceland. He's no longer able to concentrate on his current mission so Lambert pulls the plug and decides to grant him a few weeks "shore leave". He's trying what he can but Fisher can't get over it and decides to pled Lambert for a new mission. Judging from his current situation Lambert decides to grant him the status of a NOC (Non official Cover) Agent - the highest rank you can get as a Member of the agency - and sends him into a mission as Double Agent, to infiltrate the terrorist group called John Brown Army (JBA). As part of his cover all of Sam's Past is erased and the NSA set's up a few bank robberies to turn Sam into a convicted criminal. It works and Sam surrenders in front of the incoming cops. As a result he is sent to the Ellsworth Penitentiary where one of the JBA's Members - Jaime Washington is located.

I've heard rumors we won't get to see a HUD in SCDA, can you confirm this?*
Actually, yes I can - at least sort of for the Next Gen version of the game. Ubisoft Shanghai decided to "remove" the HUD in order to give the player a more cinematic like experience.

You're kidding right? How are we supposed to know then if we're completely covered by the shadows without a stealth meter or near dead without a health indicator?*
Well in SCDA there'll be some kind of small lights attached to Sam's suit, they'll change color and indicate that way if you're "invisible" or "glowing like a christmas tree".

What about the interaction box that's usually located at the upper right corner of the screen?*
Say "Bye, bye" but in the XBox360 version Icons will indicate what action you're able to perform.

Ammo & health indicator?*
It's not totally gone, but both will only pop up if Sam is in extreme situations - like in the King Kong Game. This way it's much more intensive and realistic.

Sounds good to me. Any new moves?*
Yep, SCDA will have several new and some classic moves (classic moves like the covered shot from SC1 / SCPT etc.). New moves include for example an attack that almost looks like the drown attack from Chaos Theory on the PS2. Sam can now cut wires in order to cut off the power of for example electric fences etc., he'll punch himself through translucent ice and grab the enemy from below then pull him into the water and stab him, neutralize Tanks by opening the hatch, throwing a grenade into it and then closing it - waiting for the grenade to go off, he'll be able to go prone in order to crawl below a car and use it to get without being seen into hostile territory, he'll also have a corner grab in which he grabs the enemy, pulls him to the ground and then interrogates him there and knocks him out after that etc.

So the Game is only taking place inside the prison, you mean Ubi's pulling off a Riddick?
No. Just like previous Splinter Cell titles, Sam will travel to places all around the globe, including Iceland, China (Shanghai - XBox360 exclusive), Africa, Ellsworth Penitentiary, the JBA HQ inside the US etc.

It's pretty common these days that game developers get inspired by movies or TV series, what about SCDA?*
Yes, the devs were inspired by some movies or TV series, for example Alias, 24, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, Infernal Affairs just to name a few. Ubisoft also hired an Hollywood writer who did a very intense research in what it means to work undercover, in the world of espionage to make sure the player get's to use the same tactics real Double Agents have to use to finish their mission. Basically the dev's took the best elements of everything, enhanced it and then integrated only the best of the best into the game.

Ok, what are the biggest changes in Double Agent?
Can't I solve you some atom-physic equations instead odf answering that? I guess not. Well the biggest Change is probably Sam won't always have his goggles because some of his Missions will take place at daytime and he won't need it. Also finally the way you play the Game, the story will unfold. There are multiple end sequences and multiple storylines. The areas are huge and finally they'll be covered with people which will add a lot of realism to the game. More than 180 individual models have been created to ensure you won't see the same face twice and Sam's head now has more polygons than his entire Model had in the previous Titles. In fact it's even so much detailed that Ubi decided to use it for the cutscenes. Sam will finally be able to swim and he'll also have to survive inside a sandstorm / snowstorm. You'll be able to actually play insertions during so called "directed Moments" which are basically interactive cutscenes. There is also a sort of morality feature, because as a Double Agent you'll have to make sure you're not blowing your cover which will maybe force you to do some things you normally wouldn't do. For example what if your new "friends" would want you to kill an innocent guy who simply was at the wrong place at the wrong time and in return they'll provide you with the Information you need to save 3000 people? Would you kill an innocent guy just to save 3000 people? Another change is the A.I. which is now able to perform cooperative moves inside the single player and does a remarkable job as mercs in the multiplayer (yep, that means this time you'll even be able to play against merc bots - even offline or in coop).

Woah, sounds difficult but these choices are only a minor feature, right?
Nope actually it's a major feature because as a Double Agent you'll get dual mission objectives, one from the NSA and one from the JBA, which one you complete will decide what kind of equipment you're going to get, how the story will unfold and how much trust you gain from the JBA etc. For example if you decide to stay on the NSA side you'll get the usual high tech equipment but your JBA friends will be confused on how you got your hands on this new equipment and you'll be considered as very suspicious. If you stay on the JBA side you won't get the high tech equipment, but you'll get their trust and black market weapons as well as more access to their free roam HQ. Ideally you'll find a way to solve both mission objectives at the same time, but you won't be able to do this all the time.

Wait a Second, did you say "more access to their free roam HQ"?
As a matter of fact I did. Everytime you complete a Mission for the JBA, they'll let you enter Areas of their HQ you normally wouldn't see. The HQ is very large and you can move wherever you want, whenever you want, however some Areas might be inaccessible at the beginning because you'll need to earn the JBA's Trust to access these Areas. You'll be able to talk with all the Characters of the JBA because "you're one of them" - they won't draw a gun as soon as they see you! And gaining Access to their HQ will be important because you'll have to complete some Mission Objectives in there like stealing Documents, hacking PC's, tapping phone lines etc. which will help to destroy the JBA from within. Speaking of the Mission Objectives, you won't be alone all the time so Sam will have to create some Distractions in order to fulfill his Mission Objectives - another core feature of the Game.

What if Sam's Cover is blown?
Then the JBA will catch him but don't worry you won't see a simple Game Over Screen then instead there'll appear a button Sequence which if you press the buttons in time, will launch a new cutscene showing Sam escaping from the JBA.

So what about the rumors that Sam is going to have a love interesst in SCDA?
It's true and the woman he'll be interessted in, is a Member of the JBA - Enrica Villablanca.

Yayyy! Now what about the Skydiving etc. interactive Cutscenes everyone is talking about? Are they really part of the Gameplay?*
They are, although on the current-gen systems they'll probably be non-interactive cutscenes as these systems simply couldn't handle them, if they were interactive. It's not yet sure if the PC will get the interactive version, but as soon as I know the answer, I'll update the FAQ - hands to heart.

Ok, from what you told me, I have to say it's no Splinter Cell anymore - that means no Stealth anymore, right?
Nope, although your Missions will not always take place in dark areas or areas with lots of Shadows, it's still a Stealth-Action Game and Sam will have to make use of everything he learned as Navy Seal regarding Stealth, that includes Distraction Tactics. As a matter of fact the Dev's refer to Missions outside of the JBA HQ as "classic Missions". So, don't worry it's still Sam Fisher, it's still Splinter Cell, it's still Stealth but also a whole lot more.

You mentioned Gadgets.....what kind of Gadgets is Sam going to get?
As I previously pointed out, that depends on your overall Performance but according to a very reliable source Sam will finally get a grapnel, a glass cutter and a lot more cool stuff like for example live satellite support. He'll also get the SC303 which is a compact Launcher for Sticky Cams, Sticky Shockers, Ring Airfoils etc.

In Chaos Theory Sam used a knife, will he also have this one in Double Agent?
Yep, he'll make use of the knife in SCDA as well - it's too cool to keep it out of the Game and it'll serve Sam well in various situations (not only but also in combat).

So that means Sam can also switch sides and turn evil?
No, according to the Developers, he's still the "good guy" as you know and hopefully love him, no matter what you'll do! But your choices are going to influence the Gameplay and if you want to fullfil your job as a JBA Member, you'll have to perform Assasinations, Bank Robberies etc.!

What about the cool Close Combat Techniques from Chaos Theory?
Most of it has been pulled over and integrated into Double Agent there might also be some additional CC moves.

I heard something about a Hostage Mode - what's that?
Sam will enter the Hostage Mode once he grabbed someone. Now you're already familiar with the human-shield, the forced-cooperation and the interrogation actions, but now Sam is able to drag for example a Guard to a Intercom and force him to call in a false alert in order to distract his friends.

Wow......so many things, I wonder if all those will be hard to master. I mean we get Video Tutorials like in Chaos Theory, don't we?*
No, you don't but don't worry, there is still a Tutorial System in place, it simply works a bit different than before. Let's say you get the first Time spotted as an Intruder inside the JBA HQ and you're not aware of the Arrest Mode (the one where a Button Sequence appears). At this point the Game is going to offer an Ingame Video Tutorial which will show you how Sam mastered a similar Situation.

Hmm....very innovative! Speaking of innovation, I heard there is a beautiful and LAAAAARGE level in the XBox360 version of SCDA - will we get to see it in the PC version as well?*
You're probably referring to the famous Shanghai Level, aren't you? Well, at the moment there's no info if this will really be exclusive to the XBox360 version or available in all Next-Gen versions of the game (which would also include the PC) but as soon as I know more, I'll update this FAQ und you'll get the answer - I promise.

Yeah, now that sounds fantastic. Enough about the Single Player. What about the Versus Mode?
You mean Spies VS Upsilion Forces. Judging from the Mutiplayer trailer every party is going to get brandnew equipment. For example, the Upsilion forces will be able to use a brandnew drone and send it into tunnels but it'll take some time 'til you get use to it's controls. The drone is able to spot a spy and can be detonated at any time. From all we know today, it's an all new Multiplayer mode nothing except the basic rules are kept from the previous Versus. While the spies will view the area from Third Person view, the Mercs are going to see it from First Person (as usual). Double Agent will also introduce you (at least on the current gen systems) to an absolutely brandnew more action oriented experience called the Spy VS Spy Mode in which you and 2 of your friends will challenge 3 other Friends. Now this may sound a bit like a pure, dumb Deathmatch mode in Spy Gear but it'll be a real challenge for both sides, since you doesn't have to play it in Deathmatch only because there are plenty of other modes available as well. There'll also be a close combat system that works a bit like the innovative Fahrenheit / Indigo Prophecy, so if you attack someone, he'll have to push a few buttons in the right sequence to defend himself - this should be a real challenge since it's not as simple as the grab-a-Merc-and-break-his-Neck Tactic.

Sounds cool, but new moves & gadgets means it'll be difficult to get into the game and mastering everything, right?*
Nope, unlike the first and second version of the versus mode, it'll be a lot more accessible. If you're entering an area or device your spy is able to interact with, you'll see a "ghost" version of the spy, showing you exactly what you 're able to do. This way you'll get to learn the maps faster and the "ghost" spy will even be able to show you the best hideouts etc. however the "ghost" won't be there for eternity - they'll disapear after "a while" and then stay off.

I heard there's rappeling action for the mercs, is that correct? *
Yep, that is correct and it's looking saaaaaweeeeaaaaat, believe me! Thumbs Up

The first versus mode and the one from SCCT had a certain complexity - since this one is supposed to be more user friendly, does that mean it's going to be less complex? *
Nah, don't worry it's going to be as complex as before, but it simply won't be complicated!

Nice. You know, there are rumors that spies won't have any - not even the shocker guns - or other lethal capabilities, what do you know about this? *
Nope, there won't be any guns for the spies inside the Spies VS Upsilion mode - at least I didn't see any 'til today. The spies will have to fully rely on their partner, stealth and close combat (neckbreaks are still in so watch out Upsilions), if they want to survive and accomplish the mission. They will also be equipped with only one gadget at a time, however you'll be able to go back to the spawn point whenever you wish and change your gadget. BTW: If you play as a spy, you better run once you see a merc.

What kind of new gadgets will be in the new SvM? *
At the beginning, you'll get (on the spy's side) the smoke grenade, a scrambler (for the merc's proximity detector), an adrenalin needle, flashbangs and a nice all around device placed on your forearm which is able to wireless hack a terminal, use supersonic to break glass (that includes lights & windows) or even hack the equipment of your new friends - the Upsilion Forces. The mentioned Upsilion Mercs will be equipped with their rifle (sniper-, burst-, launcher mode), frag grenades and the before mentioned drones.

I have a question about spies and mercs HUDs... In spy HUD what is that bars at top right at the screen? And what is that "Z" under the bars? Then we go in botton-right except the Health what the other bar is? And for the mercs HUD - where are shows the left ammo/granades etc?

As indicated by Rhoulette's cute little diagrams...

Spy HUD:

  • top right bars show the status of you and your teammates. The horizontal blue bars show download progress for each player. The box beside each name shows what they're doing and I think it works so that if you're hacking an objective it will blink the color of that objective, if you die , the box has a red skull in it and your name is red. Your teammates see that, too, so everyone sees what everyone else is doing.
  • The "Z" is the symbol for the extraction point and I think in this case it means you've extracted a file and should be on your way back to the extraction point, but I'm not sure. I know that that symbol shows up on your map (top left) once you've gotten a complete file and are supposed to extract it.
  • Bottom right, you have a health bar on the bottom, and the top bar is assigned to your gadget. The symbol indicates what gadget you have, and the dashes indicate how many you have left. In the example above, the spy has smoke grenades.

Merc HUD:

  • The thing in the middle is, um, your reticle. Cool
  • When you look a bit closer you will see 3 little hatch marks to the bottom-left of the center of the reticle. These indicate how many grenades you have left.

Is Ubi going to reward us in order to keep us playing the new versus after we've seen every map and played every sub-mode? *
Reward? Yes, actually there will be new skins which you will be able to unlock after you reached a certain rank and Julian Gerighty recently announced that Ubi is going to offer new - FOR FREE - downloadable content like weapons or maps which can be unlocked by the player. Julian doesn't believe in letting users pay for extra stuff like other competitor developers do.

There's recently been a rumor, that because of Windows Vista's technology, PC players will be able to play games against / with console players, does that mean we'll be able to do that in Double Agent? *
Ok, that's secret stuff, so come a bit closer - doesn't everyone need to hear! Wink Nope. BUT the game has been designed that way, that the devs will be able to integrate this feature later - if Vista is going to sell good. However if only 3 percent or even less buy the new OS than this will be a more financial question for Ubi.

Let's say I decide to maximize the count of players for example 3, will this somehow affect the game?*
As a matter of fact, it will. The amount of objectives are based on how many players are available so if you decide to play 3 vs 3 then this means you'll have to accomplish more objectives. If you're playing with less people then you'll have less objectives to complete.

Ok, since there are so many more cool features in double agent, is there now also a way to practise for versus matches? *
Yep, Ubisoft spent a great deal of resources, time and coding to create offline - mercs (sorry, no spies - their moves are obviously a bit too complicated for the AI). This enables you to play the multiplayer even if you're not online.

SWEEEEEET! But if they spent so much time to create such an awesome AI, are there any things that aren't in the game?*
Unfortunately, yes. We won't see a coop mode this time. But keep in mind, you'll often play a sort of offline coop mode in the single player once you're teaming up with Isham, Enrica, Jamie & Co - only AI based this time and it's pretty likely Annecy also integrated new Coop moves into the Versus mode.

Woah, all that sounds great, and almost too good to be true, but are there any Trailers / Teasers available?
Trailer, Teaser, Ingame Footage - whatever you want, it's there and waiting for you.

Are you sure SvsS is exclusive of current-gen systems? I'm almost sure i've heard it won't be there for x360, but no mention about the non-presence in pc version. Blink

The less we know, Better it is. Personally i would have been happier to discover the main plot of the game while playing, and all of the features too. But the videogames world has changed. Big Grin

Yeah you pretty much knew the entire story for CT before the game even went gold due to Ubi letting too much info float around out there.

And good thread Vth Thumbs Up this should help cut down on redundant topics Razz

I also want as less info as we can get. CT was kinda spoiled for me due to the fact that ubi released TO much content. I hope ubi keep us a little in the dark with DA, but I do want some gameplay footage once in a while...

As I previously pointed out, that depends on your overall Performance but according to a very reliable source Sam will finally get a grapnel, a class cutter and a lot more cool stuff.

I always wanted one of those, dam those upper classes! Razz

Nice work Smith, seems everything has been covered. A bash button combo to escape the JBA, sounds a bit Shenmue...i hope they know what they're doing.

Can you provide us with some screens from the Xbox360/PC version?

I'm a busy, busy man and I can't stay current with these forums as much as I want to. This post is just what I need to keep up with my favorite game series.

Thanks so much for this post!

Are they going to fix the color of the goggles and his wrist PDA in the snow level, along with the parachute? He's still more visible than he needs to be.

In a recent interview with Dean Takahashi, a Microft employee, he said that J Allard is working on a handheld. Yay!

Then the JBA will catch him but don't worry you won't see a simple Game Over Screen then instead there'll appear a button Sequence which if you press the buttons in time, will launch a new cutscene showing Sam escaping from the JBA.

And then what? The game switches back to normal old school splinter cell? That'd be cool... Indifferent
