is now up at Airwarfare.com
At some point even those of us who avoid hardware manuals want to fine tune their gaming experience to see if we can tailor it to our own way of doing things. You might be one of those that has problems with your TrackIR doing funny things at the most inopportune times and chances are it's not something you have to live with. I put together an illustrated guide for getting a grip on how TrackIR profiles work and affect your in-game experience so give it a read and see if you can get something out of it. Although the TrackIR version 4 is referenced, this guide is intended for all versions for the most part - the principles for adjusting your profile applies universally. The best thing about TIR is that you can tweak it to the point you forget you're using it. http://www.airwarfare.com/guides/tir_setup.htm |

I don't have a trackIR myself, but the day i get one i'll be sure to visit that page. Must have taken you ages to put togehter, appreciate your hard work! |

Nice tutorial, I'm sure it will help the ones that need it. I added it to my sig.

Funny this came up. Just formatted my PC, everything reinstalled nice and fresh ... installed TIR and driver but for some reason the driver won`t see the thing!

I had a similar thing happen at one point and no matter what I did it wouldn't reinstall properly. I think it might have something to do with the deviceID it got assigned after your fresh install but I'm not sure.
If you don't have any luck drop me a pm and I might have something for you to try out. |

I am looking to see my TrackIR 4 UPS'd here in 'Vegas sometime Monday or Tuesday |

Don't forget you must NOT connect the device before installing the drivers.

I had some difficulty coming to grips with the feel of my TIR1 for a couple months. I finally decided to get it out and really USE it. i transitioned to a TIR3 Pro and wouldn't trade it for anything (except maybe a TIR4
It's a great piece of hardware for any simmer (driver or Flyer) and I highly recommend it. TB ======================================================== I.O.C.L. (International Online Competition League) |

You're gonna love the extra FOV and precision. Which version are you upgrading from? |

Thnx for the offer. i was very close to pming you, but finally got it working! I uninstalled TIR, disconnected the TIR as well and left it over night. This morning, before switching the PC on, I also unplugged all my joysticks (I use 2 for FB) and started the PC. I installed TIR, then plugged in the TIR USB into a DIFFERENT USB PORT (basically swapped with one of my joystick ports) and it saw it and worked fine! I popped back the joysticks and they worked fine too. So all`s well. thanx for the offer anyway. |

PriK asked
It is my first TrackIR...so I am pretty jazz |

I just cannot use Track-IR. I cannot sit still when in tense action, and this causes me to lose my orientation reference = stall-crash-bugger!!.
I've use my stick POV-hats and have it down to a fine art, that it's actually better than T-IR. I'm waiting/building my own HUD helmet(USB) with internal orientation sensors... Now this will be a Track system |

I used TIR and fidget about persistently without losing reference. Sure it was awkward initially, but once acclimated, it's a piece of cake. I also smoke and chat with my wife while flying and am able to accurately maintain proper orientation.
I guess it's just all relative. TB ======================================================== I.O.C.L. (International Online Competition League) |

Yep. if you have TIR adjusted right you can fidget to your heart`s content and still keep track on the enemy. My head moves all the time with TIR and I don`t even notice it.

Charvel, that is an excellent guide. Though I have had TrackIR for years now and helped others out configuring their's, even I learnt something new!
Highly recommended! Cheers... "... Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.[whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship]" http://www.snopes.com/quotes/goering.htm |

I won't echo what's already been said but the point of this thread is being able to adjust a TIR profile so you have that freedom of movement. You just have to give yourself a bit of time to learn how. As for the HUD you will probably end up disappointed even if you manage to figure out the video end of things (two alternating displays of max 800x600 at a refresh of only 30fps, projected screen instead of widescreen for peripheral vision, etc, etc,) you'll run into some basic problems that NaturalPoint has already spent some years figuring out. First of all, you will soon find that a 360 degree head turning motion may not be as practical as it seems which means you'll have to extrapolate the yaw axis (just like TIR). That leads to the problem of sensitivity on this axis which means you'll want to be able to use a profile to make it less sensitive looking through the gunsight. Even without the extrapolation you're going to be hard-pressed to keep your head still enough for the display not to jitter around which means you're back to square one. Then there are issues with your motion sensors; lag, polling frequency (fps) and another very important factor: game support. There is a new HUD system out there now that has what you suggest building and it too has a very fundamental problem, namely relative mouse view, just like we were stuck with in the original IL2 before FB and absolute mode. Believe me it's a pain in the **** recentering all the time because of view drift. Then there's the expense. If I was to build a HUD system I would just buy a TIR4 for it because the hard work (drivers, algorithms, hardware) are already done, including the extra view axes for zoom, x, y and head roll. Anyway, best of luck with that - be sure to report your successes, I'd love to hear how it goes for you. cheers |

Excellent guide CharveL - almost makes me want to replace my old TiR2
I've sent links to friends both in- and out-side the Flight Sim community |

I don't have TIR, but I found the guide worth reading anyway.
I have got Freelook, and de-centering is a similar problem there. Reading your article gave me the idea to map a button in IL2 for re-centering the view position in a simple way (just like F12 does for TIR). Also, quite entertaining. Best quote: "You should never have to move your head any farther than where it's still comfortable for your eyes to stay on the screen and not looking somewhere inside your skull while trying to watch the monitor. Most excellent guide Charvel!

Seafire,
I had the same problem with my Track IR 4 and the new drivers. I had to go back to the previous version 3.2.28.0 |
