S! All

Here ya go, this works GREAT! I have some pics of needed supplies. 3/4 inch wooden balls ( I think 1/2 or 1/4 would work too I just haven't located any yet, and this was such an improvment I had to let it out before I did any more work).99 cents at hobby store and some reflective tape. You can get it from TrackIR or a Mechanics tool dealer and who knows where else. Mine is from my SnapOn tools infared digital tach. And some sort of glue I used my Wifes Hot glue gun. Also an old pair of glasses mine are some cheap fishing glasses that had scratched lenses, I popped them out. I only used about 5 inches of tape, also sand on side of ball flat for the glue to adhere too. Now that it's out I'm sure others will be able to improve on it and tweak it some I'm sure. Either by ball size for more precision or mounting like on hats, or using clips,Or peicings, Noze, eyebrow,Hey the tounge, there ya go never turn your head fly with mouth open and wag your tounge Mocking

Here are pics.

This is what tape was for before Track Ir

After freeing up my Hat button for looking I reallocated it to Zoom Views.

For Gunsight Zoom View

Wide view Zoomed out

Shift F1 View

Normal Gunsight view

It was only natural to leave some sort of View stuff there, after so many years of Thumb looking anyways. Wink2

And here is a couple of tracks of it being used. When veiwing make sure you have manual veiw turned off so you see what I see.(thats the switch down position) Oh made with earlier TIR drivers on a Win 2000 machine, Amd 1400 512 pc133 ram LB was working then.

Here are some in video form at Youtube.

Look at this page for a cool video of it in action in Pacific Fighters.

This is way easier than the Infra red LED Mod

Besides I havent seen any instructions on it anyways. Guys post stuff but seldom give the details, I'm from Missouri the SHOW ME STATE. Mean Happy

My mod works in the daylight and Dark too. I recorded track at 2pm with the sun shinning into the room. When you do it you will find that the TracIR stock setup on Deadzone is all you need, I have enough room to back away from sensor 5 feet and it never skips a beat.I was 2 1/2 foot from it duirng the track.

Below is a jpeg of my head travel. While in the pit. I used a short pencil in my mouth let it stick out about 1 inch. Then let it mark on note pad. then I retraced it with a felt tip for scanning.

Toadie I've been thinking about all this boom on your head deal.
Why not bring the mountain to Mohammed?
I'm thinking of making an aluminum bracket attached to the monitor, then mounting the "eye" onto that.
Thoughts?

I think it would work, of couse though it would stick out enough that If'n ya was drinking or horseing around with friends or family near your machine it might poke an eye out, or worse yet nock the dang thing to the floor breaking your trackIR <img src="/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif" width=16 height=16 border=0> My PC is in a busy traffic area, it would get busted.I origanly posted this 3 months ago and have yet to fiddle with the glasses or make any type of adjustments or repairs. Short updating drivers as they come.

I have my TrackIR just sitting on top of my viewsonic 20g monitor no special brakcets.

I have seen a posting about it awhile back, can't find it now though. This guy had it infront a large screen in a basment and home made switchboards too. The thread ran off into a discusion of his little armymen figurines in a mock battle of somesort. And how his trees looked like majauana.LOL

Edit: Ran out of room on above post it won't let me add anymore.

Here are a couple of testimonials, I've recieved on PM's

Hi T_O_A_D! Really nice post on your "trackIR cheap fix"! I watch your demo files and you seem to have been able to adjust the motion speed really nice. I was wondering if you might consider to send me your IL-2 FB trackIR profile? My email is Thanks in advance! //Jonas
Worked like a charm, made a ball just like yours and i works great! However..i used the ball as an excuse to by me a Killkenny beer with a ball inside - used that when i had finished it lol
Found a good link here with alots of info on the beer: http://student.cs.ucc.ie/~pmk3/html/beer.html The can includes a small plastic ball inside to ensure that the cream is good when u serve the beer. That is the ball i used for trackIR hehe. Btw.. i'm from Sweden <img src="/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif" width=16 height=16 border=0>

Hey Dude! I just wanted to let you know, I've had a TrackIR for a few months and it's been taking up space because I didn't know how to set up a custom profile and the tracking just wasn't smooth enough. I had seen your "TrackIR fix" and although it wasn't that I didn't believe you, I didn't think it would make THAT much difference...I was SO wrong. I was using 6 dots in a connected pyramid shape on the bill of a ball cap with very little success. I went to Michaels today (you know, the craft store?) and got some pre-drilled 1/2" wooden balls, 3 ft of 1/8" dowel rod, some reflective tape and velcro strips. The dowel rod fit perfectly and I wrapped the balls with 1/8" strips of the tape. I cut the rod to about 5" and merely attached it to the top of the bill of the cap with the velcro....VOILA! It sticks out about 3" (which is good) and the tracking is very precise and smooooth. All I can say is, I should have done this sooner. I'm sure if more people tried this they wouldn't be getting rid of their TrackIR. Allen "Thunderbolt56"

I have decided that we will introduce reflective markers that are round, or as some like to call them, reflective balls. Look for them around the end of the year.

This works great for me...

If you can, put a cheap microphone boom stand behind
your monitor. Mount the photocell on the boom towards
the back of the monitor(about a foot higher than your
head)and aim it down at your reflector. TOAD'S idea is
good for this. I mounted mine on the top-front of a
baseball hat with the brim cut off. The boom stand allows
me to get closer to the screen without being too close to the photocell. Play around till you get the positions that
work for you.

I have brought the mountain to Muhamed. I started with a .69 cents ruler. You know the school 12 inch type. I cut it in half and stuck half of it between the monitor and its stand. Obviously it does not stand up on its own So then I stuck the other half under the monitor stand. Using the hole in the upper ruller, I put the TIR base through and aimed it at myself. The bottom ruler is just there to hold the other one up. It does this by supporting the end of the TIR base. In short the TIR is now six inches closer and about an inch and a half higher. The dots on my mike boom have no problem communicating with the unit. Stutter is a thing of the past and I no longer sit with my eyes inches from the monitor. I will soon make a better brackett. But for now, it was not a bad way for an old ruler to go.

That great you got it working. But did you see I can sit 5 foot away with no ill effect on my tracking. I beleive I could sit further away but Wifes dinning room table is an obstruction and she just won't let me toss it out. <img src="/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif" width=16 height=16 border=0>

Here is another way Ive done it.

Assortment of Aligator clips Radio Shack $2.69

Drilled balls so clip would slide in snug.

Takes a bit longer to build than the glasses but then you need a pair of old glasses that need the lenses popped out.

The "alligator clip on the cap" looks almost exactly like the finished product I have except I used a thin dowel rod and velcro to attach it. Mine sticks out about an inch or two farther, but same theory....bottom line is...it works!

The more I read your suggestions and the reults, the more I think my TrackIR is fading (don't read into that; I still love it). No kind of tape gave sufficient reflection, so I've reverted to the LED thing. The IR LED worked best, but it burns out easily. The visible light one worked fine. I do think it's my TrackIR and not your suggestion. I'll just replace it with the new version when it comes out.

By the way, just to restore my credibility with the show-me state lol, here's the specifics. A trip to Radio Shack. Bought 1.5V to 12V variable power adapter an LED, and 100-ohm resistor. Set the PS to 4.5 volts. Soldered the 100-ohm resitor (a 33 was recommended, but didn't seem to work right) to one of the LED leads. Built the leads up a bit to act as contacts. Plugged it directly into the PS cord, which comes with a 2-prong female plug. Used a bit of coat hanger to wrap around the plug, then nent the other end 90-deg. I put some sticky-back clips on my headset (both also from Radio Shack), and theaded the wire down one side of the headset, then snapped the bent coat hanger into the same clip. I used a couple more clips to guid the wire down to the left ear piece.

I'm old, with typical old-guy eyes, so I get as close to the monitor as I can and leave the receiver on top of my monitor.

I like your solution better, as it's one less wire to get tangled up in. But Jim Richardson is also making a reflective ball available (I think), so the idea had obvious merit.

There. I should be in the clear now lol.

tenmmike,

I was thinking the reciever is getting weak. I turn off its IR source when I use an LED. But, you have a point. I hadn't considered that the IR source in the reciever might be getting weak. It does seem to give a decent return with the dots; you just can't turn your head very far before it gets dicey. Hmm. I'd better drop Jim R a line. He's been great in the past.

Aluminum will not work, Sorry tried that. Just down load that stock profile, at the top of thread I posted and place it in your TrackIr folder. C:\Program Files\Naturalpoint\TrackIR

This is good with the ball, If you are using dots, and don't have reflective tape, and limited by not having enough dots for a ball, just get half of a ball and cover it evenly with the dots. Just place dots around the base of ball first then gradually place them in a circle to the top of if. Layer them like fish scales or bird feathers the very center one should be the last one you put on. It should work alright that way.

Off to work will check back later.
