Whether your first GR game was GR PC or GRAW 2, I'd like to chat a bit about what you think of Ghost Recon. What top three words/phrases immediately come to mind when you think of Ghost Recon?

Example: I'll use R6, so as to not influence any answers. When I think of R6, what immediately comes to mind is:

1. International - Missions take place in different locations, most that I've never been to.
2. FAMAS - Love that gun. Used it a ton back in Raven Shield for its fast rate of fire, which I felt I needed to make up for my horrendous ping from Hawaii.
3. Team fun - I spent many many late nights playing with my clan.

OK, your turn...Answer and discuss!

Its funny that your first option was the one the thing that was dropped from R6V.

For me Ghost Recon:

1 - Playing with a GREAT community.

2 - Realistic tactical gameplay with emphasis on choice.

3 - Compelling and believable storylines.

1 - Natural, non-linear environments and missions
2 - Realistic (or at least an approximation of realistic) tactics and teamwork
3 - Focus on planning and tactics over reflexes or memorization

And I'll throw in a bonus #4 - GREAT SOUND. I've found GR to be one of the most enjoyable games to play with surround sound. Good sound makes listening as important to survival as watching what's on the screen. They really botched it in R6V and R6V2 - things would be quiet even when right next to you, and other things would be really loud even with several walls between you and the noise.

I'm going to have to borrow a couple of the last answers, albeit with a little tweaking;

1 - Tension. In a really tight fight, it can become quite tense and raise the level of excitement, at least when compared to kill-die-kill-die-kill-die run'n'gun games that require no subtle skill and give little reward (in my opinion). This also applies to the excellent lobby system which not only creates great competition between teams, but also creates new teams and new friendships.
2 - Realistic (or at least an approximation of realistic) tactics, teamwork, and environments
3 - Focus on teamwork, planning and tactics over reflexes, memorization and unfair rank related bonuses

Oh, and great sound too. You can't underestimate the importance of the sound!

And you can't forget 'comedy'. The hilariously awful AI-
*spin round, do a little jig, and headshot you from 400 yards away*
or *spin round, do a little jig, and completely miss while standing right next to you*
They may also decide to run up to you, crawl around a bit, and give you a cuddle.

Cpt. Mitchell says "I'm a Ghost", as explosions go off all around and he runs over a bridge and fights a tank with an LMG...
Yeah, real sneaky, I hardly noticed you were there...

It all depends on which games you refer to.

GR-GRIT
1. Stealth - it beats out run and gunners any day.
2. Communication - Teamwork ensured a win.
3. Tactics - Flanking with cover fire (remember maps that you could flank on?)

GR2-GR2:SS
1. OTS - massive change to game play style.
2. Bunny suit - and all the others made game play fun again.
3. Peaks - Why were some of these maps not re-released???

GRAW-GRAW2
1. M107 - cheapest gun ever (but it works)
2. Headquarters - played out choke point maps.
3. Lag - Don't try to host 16 if you have a dial up connection.

GR4
1. Roots - I hope we go back to realism.
2. Realism - That would be 1st person and the fact that you can't run with a M107 and fire off 10 rounds accurately.
4. Maps - make them large and allow attack from multiple positions. Remember Lost Convoy? Remember Peaks? Remember Wilderness?

1) Way of life. I didn't buy Ghost Recon to play on my console, I bought my console so I could play Ghost Recon.
2) Late nights. So many of them. How can you stop when you're fighting for your lives!
3) Friendship. My GR team buddies have been friends for years. I don't even know what they look like. That's probably a good thing.

* The tactical approach of a team based game at its best is what gets my juices flowing.
Communication, cunning diversions, tight unit moving in covering formation and shear excitement when you outsmart, out-gun your opponent.

* Meeting wonderful people from all four corners of the world shows that GRAW-community is simply the best.

These are truly remarkable days we live in, cherish them!
Thousands of miles between us all 16 players in the artificial woods reacting in real-time is truly amazing.

* Like Crimson Thunder pointed out, great sound.
Love to play my 360 hooked with that optic-cable to my surround system.
Since I play a lot late nights I use headphones hooked into my amp (microphone around the neck).

Downsides:
* Takes forever to wind-down from the adrenaline rush.

* When I don't get to play GRAW2 for a while I experience minor Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms, your body quickly gets use to a certain levels of positive stress-hormones (Cortisol).

* Sleep-deprivation due to late night sessions triggers severe Migraine, inflammation in my nasal and facial cavity mucosa and my cerebral vessels.
The good side of severe pain levels I get high levels of synthetic morphine, Sumatriptane fed intravenously and diclofenac in form of muscular injections.

* French buggers with terrible manners and horrible connection.

08 Stockholm Island Thunder , yeah I know I take this whole Ghost thing waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to seriously!

Beonder, I mean GR the franchise as a whole, not for a specific game you've played. I'd like to see what people view it as when it's not associated to a particular game you've played. Thanks for breaking it down though. Smile

Then you just need to take the first statement from each of the first three sets Wink

Hmmm, might this be a preemptive Hype strike already? No, it can't be... UBI wouldn't do that, right kimi! Blink Veryhappy

I'll play along just so there is another voice here.

What does Ghost Recon (before GRAW I & II) means to me:

1.- International battles in Diferent scenarios with different weather.

2.- Unscripted path to finish the selected mission

3.- Choosing my weapons prior to mission w/o looking for diamonds or side missions to get to usable guns. In other words, making the game as real as it can be, if you are going to make it rate "R", make the game for adults not kids.

1. Coop - having coop missions for 16 people that lets you break into small teams and go at different objectives at the same time

2. Multi-dimensional - in Single Player or Coop there are multiple teams entering an area from multiple directions at the same time - POW Camp in OGR is a prime example

3. Team-based - no hero-based gameplay.

I have the fifth freedom... so watch out, here I come

1. Teamwork being the core value.

2. Tactical game-play with a high degree of difficulty and strategy(Not run n gun).

3. Great open maps oriented around team play and being tactical.

Ghost Recon to me used to mean tactical team gameplay. OGR. The new GRAW is great with all the new graphics and and gizmos but I feel they left out the most important part of Ghost Recon that made it earn its name as best tactical shooter.... They left out the feeling of power, the feeling of strategy, and planning. The new GRAW is a little make believe in the fact that 1 guy Mitchell and 2 or 3 other guys are going to wipe out a whole entire country of enemies, just like in Vegas and R6 3 guys wipe out a city full of terrorists. The thing I miss most about the original Tom Clancy games was the team control and being able to switch to 1 of you 4 or 5 teams of 3 to 4 members in the squad. What ever happened to red blue gold green teams and snipers that you could order to take the shot ( sights are hot).......I miss pre- game planning to set up alpha, bravo, charlie delta echo go codes to execute tactics and set up flanks and cover teams all breaching in at the same time... etc I believe these were just a few of the features of the originals tom clancy games that made them the best tactical shooters.
So instead of just sitting there playing my favorite game the way I did'nt like to play it. I made my own Campaigns that allow control over multiple teams to give it that Original Ghost Recon feel.
if you already own GRAW 2 PC then it's free to download here

1) Sneak - gradually sneak up for position, attack, repeat. Somewhere along the line this formula came apart and became a "run and gun" game. I get called out for "camping" for my stealth gameplay. Booooo.

2) Stealth - blending into the environment with the goal of being undetected.

3) Gameplay/Graphics - In my opinion the GR series has far and away lead the competition in both fun gameplay (multiplayer only) and graphics since GR2 on original Xbox.

1. Cooperative missions
2. Horrible cutscenes and in game cinematics that completely ruin the immersion of any mission
3. Weak AI

I hear you bro!
The ugly side of GRAW online.
Outside ones friends-list and clan-buddies, a public game is horrible.
9/10 Squeaky toy squealing Host with lag-connection.
Got the DLC turned off, digital and wood camo on and turned the session into a hysterical HALO-hyped run 'n gun.

And Lord have mercy if you break that pattern.
The host starts to cry, accusing you of cheating, camping, spawn-killing, left-bumpering, double sticking, using a turbo-controller and a lag-switch.

You know I might just snap one day, track down a IP-address and commit the first XBL-based murder.
