Poor performance Lock-ON and SU27
I use a GeForce FX5200 series adapter, a P4 1.7gig processor and around 348meg of fast memory. What makes these two programs so sluggish in the performance area. I don't care if screen resolution is down to 800x600 16 bit, the games are just not acceptable. The latest Nvidia driver is installed and DirectX 9c. I just gave up on SU27 and not real happy with Lock - on. Any recommendations would be appreciated because the games both look like real winners. I have one other machine with a voodoo 5 and also another with an ATI 8500 , unfortunately the 8500 is married to Linux so I won't be using it. I do have a 7200 ATI and if anyone has had good performance with that card then please let me know.
Thanks
Tom

I know the search button in this forum rarely works ,and there has been multiple post on this subject ( but hey whats 1 more )
1 lock -on needs alot of processor power 1.7gig is on the low end and that fx5200 is even lower, IMHO its one of the worst cards on the market a G4 -4400 has better performance, i like most others in here had to upgrade their systems for this game .
I went from a 1.4 athlon 512 mb pc 133 ram and a g4-4400 only getting 8 to 10 fps on the runway and 20 to 25 in the air, to a 3.0 prescott 800fsb 1024 3200/400 ddr, and a ati 9800 pro, now im getting 25 to 35 on the runway and in the air 50 to 90 fps. All i can really say is if you can afford it do a major upgrade not for just this game but most of the newer games like Battle field 2 are going to need more power.

I hate to say it and i mean no offence, but that rig is really out dated. Lockon is heavily CPU dependant and 1.7gig is just not enough, also 512meg ram is also the absolute minimum you want to play this sim.
The fx5200 isnt helping your cause either. I would highly recommend a new system. Im sure you could put together a cheapish one that will run lockon reasonably well. AMD64 3000+, 1gigPC3200,128mb 9800pro would be a good start. Basically all that is left is a MB. Probably use your current HD,cdroms, psu and case.
It would be well worth the investment, gaming would be completely different.
Cheers

Thanks for the advice. This was about what I expected. I wil go ahead and do a major build of a new machine. The prices are great now for combos. This P4 was a real stinker from the beginning and a terrible gamer. I still think I will load the game on the voodoo machine and try the celeron 1.2, it has been a better performer for a few other titles.
Thanks again

Being that most games are PC WIN32 based. Why would you put your top performing card on a unix/linux system? I thought you would want to install your best performing card on the system (or OS) that will be running most of the games you will be playing...?

I think your processor is okay...that is it is fast enough. When my CPU died last year I actually ran LOMAC reasonably well on a 1.2 Ghz T-Bird for about a week and got surprisingly good performance with a Radeon 9700.
Your real problem is your video card, which can do DX9 shaders, but is donkey balls slow. A Geforce4 4200 has much better fill-rate performance, and you can probably get one for dirt cheap now.
If you are on a budget, the card I'd recommend for you would be Radeon 9600 or if you can stretch it, a 9700. Both can be had for about $100 or so now.
