It really helps to understand what the instruments are trying to tell you.

The yellow lines are your "required bank and pitch indicators" and are trying to help you turn(bank) towards the waypoint and adjust your altitude (pitch) to be on course to the next waypoint.
It's probably easier to use the top and side "Required Heading Indicator" and "Required Altitude" parts of the ADI when getting started.

When you have a good understanding of both the ADI and HSI

you'll be halfway to being a qualified navigator.

Besides understanding the instruments the other half of navigation is Situation Awareness. And often the best way get that is a good map, a copy of your flight plan, and a good understanding of the mission. You could (like all good pilots) get all that good stuff during your pre-mission flight planning.

There is a lot of information you can pickup from your mission map and route. This view is from the Map (Binocular Tool) using Satellite and Your Aircraft options. It shows the nav waypoints and ALT/SPEED/ETA/HDG/DIST plus when you put your mouse on the way point you can get the Lat/Long COORDs too.

It's not always easy to remember those details and its not possible to get back to those same screens during the game. You could make yourself a copy of that info for your Flight Plan.

You can get a copy of Shepski's flight plan in PDF or text version over at CombatAce. CombatAce LockOn downloads
Most LockOn sites have some type of download and printable maps. Nice things to have hanging around your own "cockpit".

Now its not necessary to do all of that just to enjoy the game. But it won't hurt to do more pre-flight planning. The better you understand the flight plan the easier it is to understand what those instruments are telling you.
