At first I felt the same way, my TV blows so I can never read any text that appears on it (it's fine with old Xbox games but not with 360 games) So I was just guessing on how to duel. I managed to figure it out and I find it amazing, for the most part I am able to win the duel on my first try

Maybe they should give players some kind of choice thru a menu option, like use mouse buttons or mouse mat. Honestly i see no increase of speed by using the slider.
And as i try to keep the hand next to the gun, it auto-magically rises away from it. Any way to turn that off? Also to be Honest, Im a 64 year old KID, maybe i just need them to give me a optional handicap......What you think?

No handicap needed, really. A 61'er here, and it's really about keeping your hand as close as possible before the bell. Playing the PC version, I let him do his first walk(only keeping him centered)then on the 2nd walk I move my hand down as far as it will go. On his third walk I move toward the holster ( short strokes on the mouse to the left) and on his final walk before the bell, keep his hand as close as possible ( I love this part because you really have to concentrate on keeping your hand close (really short stroke on the mouse to the left now) his walking (keep him centered) and the bell. If my hand is in the magic spot when the bell rings then a move to the left and the game takes over and raises the gun and I watch the crosshairs move upwards. Hitting him in the groin or the heart( did that once) is depending on how close you are (again) to the gun when the bell rings. If his wiggles his fingers then you've drawn too soon. Usually takes me 5-8 trys to nail him. Hope that helps.

I have the Pc version and once you get the hang and feel of it it's really easy...I found it the best part...don't know in cosoles though...it's funny I had more problems with the first guys...but when I got the hang of it i felt the last duels were easy I finshed many with one try only.

They are easy as hell, once you learn how to do it, i don't know how hard it is on the consoles, but on PC.. just drag mouse to left. Simple as that.

Good luck trying to disable the hand straying away from the gun Chuckmo. I tried editing the duel scripts, because after beating the game on Very Hard with music, I did another play through without music, as I got tired of some of the more repetitious and annoying rock sections. I also found I was tiring of the duels taking several tries sometimes on Very Hard.

What's weird is the duel scripts are pretty straight forward and easy to understand, edit and save, but the changes don't seem to have any effect, whether it be the time the enemy takes to draw, amount of moving he does, duration of duel, percentage of his success on first shot, or even whether he'll draw at all based on how close two numbers in the script are.

I love the look of the duels in this 2nd installment, they are full on realistic compared to the somewhat browser game look of the first one. The problem is, even if you get used to the gun hand straying away and more annoying to me by far is your character usually not drawing at all if you're still moving, the Hard mode is too easy, but just right in duels, and the Very Hard mode is just right, but too hard in duels.

Had they balanced the duels to the rest of the game a bit better or IMO, just made it so you can ALWAYS draw after the bell vs not being able to while you're moving, it would have been just fine. I can see their point of making the gun hand stray a bit while strafing, even though it is very exaggerated, but there's absolutely no reason you shouldn't be able to draw while moving and it feels like a buggy game because of that one quirk.

Another oddity I've noticed is on the default difficulty you can in fact make effective kill shots in duels at or below the belt of the enemy, but on Very Hard several times they have not gone down with such shots and the cursor was definitely red. I think if the devs find the time to put a bit more play testing in, they'll discover duels are the primary area the game needs tweaking, and it would make the game so much better.

Cant imagine doing this on a PC with a mouse. Its gotta suck. I was a hardcore PC gamer but now that I got he PS3, I might have a hard time going back. I really cant see the duels being easy using a keyboard and mouse. Perhaps try getting a Logitech Gamepad?

With the PS3 controller, the duels are rather easy - you just gotta get the hang of it. Trick is not to shoot to early - wait until the crosshairs are on the opponents body then shoot. I found myself shooting too early thus losing duels.

I agree wiyh what everone is saying..i have a lot of ubisoft games..and i think the more they come out with the worse they get.Just like the riding horses with a time limit in original coj chasing billy.. using mouse to control horse well i finally found a cheat to skip that chapter and finished game.In coj2 these gunfights really, really suck bigtime..someone should find cheat codes to even the score..for the money u pay for this crap *** game u could buy a real good game that u can enjoy playing.i wont buy anything else with ub name on it again

Counter his moves. Every move he makes, you make the opposite way. Keep him in the center of your screen. I find at the outset of the duel to move first and get him to follow you. I've never counted or listened to the music stop (it's turned off) you just get the feeling that it's time to draw.
In one of the duels in hard mode I actually got off two shots, one in his left arm and the second was a headshot. I find no problem keeping his hand close with the mouse and my sensitivity is one click away from the slowest.

Are you trying to draw while strafing or standing still, and is your hand very close to but not touching the gun?

The two main keys of dueling I find are to look directly at your hand, using peripheral vision on the opponent, and being standing still when drawing. The latter is best achieved by trying to anticipate the last strafe of your opponent and stop moving just before he does. It's better to do this and have him ever so slightly off center than to not be able to draw. Other than that, max mouse sensitivity helps if you're on PC.

Don't take me wrong but I don't think it's a game issue or bug... it's the game difficult.

'Twas hard for me in the final chapter playing as Thomas but I had no problems in duelling. Once you get used to, it's easy. Don't blame the game, it just make the developers work look very bad.

You know when Ray/Thomas hand is about to pull the gun when they make a kind of scratch movement with the fingers. Keep pushing your right analog stick lightly to the left.
It's hard to tell in the forum but believe me, is a matter of practice. If you're in a bad death streak in duels, take a break then play it again.
