Hi, i used to have the same exact problem, i fixed it installing the latest graphic card driver and latest sound card driver, install both of them and game runs smooth. My system is: Intel core2duo 2.4ghz ATI Radeon hd4350 512mb Realtek high definition audio. Don't use the windows auto update driver thing for the sound card, its crap. Go to the manufacturer homepage, in my case this was This one. Hope this helps

My audio sampling is at dvd quality, I even tried lowering it to cd quality, no help. I have 6 gigs of ram, so like a previous poster said, it's sounding like a memory issue. People with high end specs like mine are having the same crash issue, at least that's what my google searches are showing. Can I get an official statement from a techie, it's not like I can return a pc game.

If you think your soundcard drivers are the issue, but aren't sure, there is an easy way to troubleshoot this. Edit your settings.scr file (using notepad) where is had the sound driver listed in that file you will see three other options "Remarked out" above. Change whatever the bottom one says to "none". This will disable ingame sound and take those drivers out of the equation. If your game still crashes after doing that, then you know it's not the sound drivers causing the problem and can focus on other suspects. When I get home from work I'll get in there and provide more specific details about this (I'm operating off my memory for now). Techland: maybe you can provide a "safe mode" settings file like other games to help these players troubleshoot their compatibility problems?

Thanks for the reply! I looked around for a settings.src file, but there was none to be found. I did find an "Audio.src" but after poking around in it with notepad I didn't find anything that seemed all that similar to what you described. Maybe I need to have succesfully started the game once to create a settings.src?

While it's not inconceivable that it could be a memory problem, I have 6 GB too, and simply reducing the sample quality fixed it for me. Not the most convenient thing ever but at least I can play.

StreetBushido, Yes, that's the file. I'm answering many of these posts with my knowledge of COJ1. Techland changed many of the files used in the game (and removed many, apparently). If you look at the top of the audio.scr file in notepad there are 3 or 4 different values listed (these are "REMarked out using a !/ notation") I have only briefly glanced through the the new files but I did specifically change the default value (the last entry in that file) to dsd3d (directsound direct 3d) to try to fix a sound issue I have whenever the narrator speaks. If memory serves me correctly, one of the values is "none" or "no sound" (again, this is from memory). Try changing the last value to this and restart the game to see if it helps. Of course with that setting there will be no sound in game (or at most, software emulated sound) but it should help you rule out sound drivers. If the game still crashes, change the value back to the default and start looking at video drivers or other things that could be causing the problem. Hope this helps. Edit: Oh, I almost forgot. In COJ1 many of the files listed in the install directory didn't actually do anything to your game settings. The files that actually affected your game settings were in your profile (documents and settings) in the my documents/call of juarez/out/profiles/default/ folder. Now, I have no idea if this is still the case, but it's worth looking at incase it's still the same.

I changed the value for the GlobalSettings line to NoSound, saved it and ran the game. Same error as before: a black screen, a cutoff sound as if the sound that accompanies one of the startup logos is interrupted and then nothing, which forces me to hard-reboot. The strange thing is that i still got sound after setting it to NoSound. Also there was no alternative file to alter, I think the one in the game folder is the only one. Either this means that my problem is not sound related, or that I changed the wrong thing :P. Thanks for the help so far though!

It doesn't surprise me that you still would get sound on the movies during intro. These are WMV files (standard video files) and wouldn't necessarily be affected by in-game sound settings. Try blanking out the movies (I've already posted how to do this in the forums) to eliminate the intro movies completely (incase your problem is related to the WMP11 codecs they used for the movie files). you might look at the post i wrote regarding the video.scr file because setting all your video to lowest settings might also allow you to start game (then you can just increase the settings one at a time to troubleshoot the problem). Good luck.
