How do I name 'home-made' kits?

I have created all necessary folders, but when I name my kit: rifleman kit01 it overwrites the original.

When I name it (let's say the kits end at nr.24) rifleman kit25 it does not show in the list of kits?!?!

What causes this?

You need to edit the selectable kit list too...
Open "no_restrictions.kil" with notepad, and you'll see something like this:

...
***** <-- Add your line here

...

This is the list with all available kits for the four classes (asl, sni, dem, sup) and the four platoons (plt1, plt2, plt3 and plt4).

To add a new rifleman kit, find the last line of the mp_plt1_asl.atr entry, then add . Repeat this for the four different platoons.

Thanks...

So,...do I need to name them in order of sequence or can I name them whatever I want, e.g. My Own.kit?

Btw....you also know what the LOD1,2 and 3 are / do?

I've messed something up to...I have DS and IT running and as I am going to play on a LAN with my nephew, we want to have the outfit of Jack Stone for 'our' guys 'in the field'

I went into IGOR and copied all .rsb and .chr files of JS into the Platoon1 - Sniper file.

When checking in GR the only thing it does not do is the blinking...I've copied it from the Original map, so it should be everything he has on as in the first missions (black hood etc). Changing to different settings, as in desert and jungle, causes Jack to have no eyes (white), his black hood, but on the back you also see the scarf(?) which he has on his head during the IT missions....!?!?!

I've copied ALL files exactly the same. Still,...it even changes when deactivating or prioritizing the two?!?!?!

Someone?!?!

Seems like the code I copied gave some errors...If you can find out what I mean, it would be great

You can name your kit whatever you want, but use less than 8 letters for the name (I had some problems with longer names)...

???????????????????????????????????????????????????

Code YOU copied or I copied?!

I think it has something to do with the camo he has in the IT maps, but copying all orig. files (with the hood) should also overwrite that?! Shouldn't it?

Yes, it has to do with camo:

LOD1-3 is for forest maps (Ghost Recon)
DesertLOD1-3 is for desert maps (Desert Siege)
JungleLOD1-3 is for jungle maps (Island Thunder)

The number 1-3 are for low-medium-high character texture detail (but I don't know if it's low-med-high or high-med-low)

I have added 4 new kits to the No Restrictions file. They show up, but not with the name I gave them? They are just in the list as kit nr. 17,18,19 and 20.

I've just added another 4 to the file, but they do not show up?!?!?!

You can name the files whatever you want, but, like you say, they will just show up with the "correct" numbers.

Are you sure you have the file names for those 4 new kits correct? One small typo can make a whole world of difference (and a crash sometimes).

Ah, the joys of modding...

As the Fox has already said, whatever you name the kit when you make the file, it will always appear in the kit selection thing in-game as "Rifleman Kit 98" or whatever.

The problem you're having with Jack's textures... Sounds like somewhere you've got the different textures (GR, IT etc) both activated. This is why you have his hood and his bandana.

I don't know if you did this mod-work in Notepad or Igor, but in Igor, in the character editor, there should be different places for you to specify a standard (woodland) uniform, and then a desert one in a separate place, and finally a jungle one for the IT maps. So I can only say, make sure you have it set in there correctly. If not, I don't know what causes it. The blink thing... Have you definately got the blink texture for him? Coz there's one texture for an actor's face, and another, separate, one for the blink... It should work if you have both of these. Otherwise, I'm out of ideas off-hand. Did you save the default skins for the troops before you overwrote them btw? So you could get them back after you've done your LAN gaming?

BTW, I don't think there is a desert kit for Jack, is there? He wasn't in DS - Scott was the only specialist sniper...

Goodmorning this morning

I have checked the names for the kits and they are all correct.

The first 4 show up, but the next 4 do not.

How is it counting anyway?! Do you overwrite anything when adding kits? I should think not, but they (the kits) just show up somewhere in the middle...

So,...1 untill 16 is standard (have DS and IT running). Then we get my first 4 kits, 17 untill 20 and after that the other standard kits show up again, all up to 36.

About the head and blinking...Somehow it uses both. ..I changed all the stats in IGOR. Changed them all to the 'hood-jack stone'. Did that for Original, MP1 and MP2. All of them are the same. Why does it still show this 'bandana'?

I have simply overwritten all of them. I did not want to go through the trouble of copying everything, so I decided to overwrite it all and if it causes serious crashes, I will go for the full re-install.

I need to play around with it, to see what can and cannot be done...

So,...making some new kits, getting Jack Stone's outfit, adjusting some weapon stats etc etc...

Here are some Q's:

-Do you need to use the head and blink file of the same actor or can you change that too? So...the head of Galinsky and the blink file of Jack Stone?

-What does the LOD do? Didn't really get that before...

-Could you use the body of one actor and the head of JS?

Good morning back at ya!

Your kits: I don't know why they're showing up in the middle. Maybe it's a particular way GR sorts through the kits (eg displays them all alphabetically by kit name, not chronologically by date of creation), but I really don't know the answer to this one. I don't think it overwrites others though. So if you had 30 kits, and you added four yourself, you should now have 34 kits to pick from - I think! I don't know why you can't get you other four displayed either... Haven't really played around much with altering the kits, to be honest - well, I have, but only for the enemy.

Jack's bandana is another one I don't really know. There must be some sort of conflict in there somewhere, but I couldn't tell you where it would be...

As for your Qs:

1 - I think it needs to be the same actor. The face texture is their face with the eyes open, the blink is with eyes closed (I think). In-game, you see the face texture. When they blink, you momentarily see the blink texture, and then it goes back to the standard face texture again. Hence, you see the eyes close and then open. If you used Astra's face, and Jack's blink, I think her whole face would change to Jack's when she blinked, and then go back to her own face again. Try it, coz I never have, but that's the way I understand it to work...

2 - LOD is "Level Of Detail". You essentially have three pictures of the same thing (LOD1, LOD2 & LOD3), the difference being in the resolution of the picture. You have one low res, one medium, and one high. Only one is displayed in the game though, depending on what graphics setting you have selected. So, if your graphics are turned down to recover performance from a system that's struggling, you'll see the low resolution textures, which won't look as "polished". On a good system, with the graphics turned right up, you'll get the high res texture, which will show far more detail on the uniform - hence the name "level of detail". We're not sure whether LOD1 is the low res or the high res (ie is 1-2-3 low-med-high, or high-med-low?). Does that explain it?

3 - Yes.

Hmmm....

Somehow it counts the kits, but not in any specific order I can see!

The first weapons are the ones from the original...mine come after that and only after my kits the ones from DS and/or IT are there...

So the naming of your own kits is simply to give it A name?

Is there any way to add a whole new group? In additon to riflemen, demolitions etc? Something like 'MY TEAM'?

Rifleman, Demolitions, Support, Sniper, My Team....

That way I could add kits in my own group without overwriting any others...

We're getting back to creating your own class of soldier again, aren't we?!?

You probably could create your own group of weapons kits, but I'd have to play to work out how to do it - I've never tried. To be honest, I've never felt the need to! I suppose the trick would be to specify which class of soldier could use which kits - eg if you create your own kit with a sniper rifle in it, should everyone be allowed to use it, or just those in the "sniper" class?

I shouldn't think you'd need to do this though - I don't think you'll be overwritting any other kits. So the only advantage I could see would be to create a kit that more than one class could use (eg take the kit SA80 + grenades - it's a demo kit, but you might want to allow a rifleman to use it). If that's the only reason you're doing it, it's probably less messing around to just create the kit twice: once as a demo kit, and once as a rifleman kit.

I suppose you could argue that any soldier should be allowed to use the rifleman kits, because the army always trains people to be riflemen first, before they specialise (eg have explosives or sniper training)... Maybe you could do this by opening the character editor and altering the kit path for the soldiers to include the rifle kits??

If so, then I'd be tempted to place all kits into one common folder, and allow every class of soldier access to that kit folder... But then you'd only have general soldiers, not experts in different fields, so I think it'd take something away from the game...

Another over-length post, filled with meandering thoughts and incoherent logic! Sorry. What exactly are you trying to do? And why do you want to do it, rather than just leave the game as it is?

There can be three levels of detail for a character model, and I believe a different level of detail texture for each model. I believe IT Jack Stone has 3 character LODs but only one texture LOD. LOD1 is highest detail.

The game engine only supports 4 classes of soldiers. You can rename them, but you can only have 4 total.

What happens if you change mod priority in the options menu? The original GR is always highest priority, but you could maybe make DS and IT higher priority than your mod so their kits come before yours?

Blink face is also used when they are dead. Try one of the UN guys. When you kill them they still stare blindly up at you cuz they have no eyelids. Very disturbing.

Gav,

I want to change some kits, as there are some strange combo's. You can pick a sd sniperrifle with grenades, but no MP5sd with grenades....things like that...

I want them for LAN only, so not for regular MP games. I guess that's no problem though. If I would start up an MP game, everybody can use the kits or they might not even show up...don't know actually...

I think I read a while back that there are no real differences between the classes. Don't know if that's true, but with that in mind, I wanted to change the sniperkits. Not just siperrifles, but also other weapons. As long as they have JS's outfit.

Everything works so far, except the 4 other kits I made and the face of JS. The other things are fine...although I would also like to know if you can change the kit icons?

If I would want the outfit of JS, the M249 as primary and the SA53 as secondary, could I make a new kit icon for the combo: m249 / sa53?

Good point on the UN guys not having a blink thing though... I'd forgotten about that.

Ah, well, if they looked French, then they're not really on the same side, are they, so shooting them's fair enough!!

Any Frenchmen around here? Just checking we're not offending any sensibilities...

"Umm... yeah, I'm American. Does that mean I'm off the team?" Well... I'm not quite sure... You do seem a bit disappointed, so I'm feeling very cruel and nasty now... But if you come out with me to fight then I'm certainly going to have you well away from me! There's been way too many occurances of Americans shooting Brits by mistake!

At least, I think they were mistakes...
