I was working on the map (yes, I'm still working on it) and was thinking - is it possible to start a mission with the team riding the insertion heli, then see a SAM come streaking up at you. Then however they do the fade to actually starting the mission, you are now on the ground with a crashed heli, perhaps one or more random members of the team dead and maybe NPC crew survivors tagging along as you try to accomplish your mission with not enough or not the right mix of team plus extra baggage (crew) to deal with. Would that work?

sure you could do the whole heli insertion, I think there is an antiaircraft gun in black sun that shoots at helis so Im sure thats possible too. I know you can script it to kill an actor but i dont know about it killing folks in the player platoon (may want to ask san about that) and I know you can script it so that actors (like the crew) would appear in a zone when the player platoon arrives in the zone so all that is probably possible, as far as how.......prolly want to ask gav or san.

Heavens - the mod forum is still alive!! I was beginning to think that I was the only one lurking around here!

The whole thing sounds possible to me. You can script a heli insertion by placing the player platoon into a chopper at the start of the mission. The chopper then flies over the map (just give it a plan in the usual way). On the map, you have some kind of anti-air weapon - the one in Black Sun may work although I've never seen it myself (I've got the mod, just haven't got round to playing it yet!), or there's the SAM thingy in the original game - you have to destroy one on that night-time mission at the castle. Assuming that does actually fire missiles, you'd just set the plan for that vehicle to destroy the chopper you're riding in. Set the player platoon to be invincible to avoid them being killed in the blast. You'd set up an insertion movie clip to show all this - IT's missions all have this, as does my GB01 Castle Siege mission for those that have it, as well as Frostbite and plenty of other mods to see how that's done.

I think you'd then have to have a crashed heli object on the map to look like a crash site, and a zone next to it (or possibly all around it). I'm not entirely sure about that, because you may get the crashed chopper on the ground anyway after you shoot it down. I've never destroyed a chopper, so I can't actually tell you whether it'll appear on the map or not. If it does, you don't need to add an object to represent it, but if not, you would need to have that on the map. If so, you may have to hide it at first to avoid it being shown during the intro movie. Once the chopper's been shot down (use Death Vehicle as a trigger), end the intro movie, transport the player platoon to the crash zone, turn their invincibility off, and then reveal a few friendly troops that were previously hidden to be the helicopter crew. Easy....
