How do you check the amount of polys your model consists of?
When is it too much? What is the minimum (if there is any) and what is the maximum amount? Well, there isn't any hard and fast limit. For vehicles and helicopters and such, probably 2000 is ideal, but as long as there arent many in view at a time, that may not be too bad. Only way to know is to try it out in game. I don't think it would crash the game. just make it very laggy.

You could use the Optimize modifier under the modify tab on the right. If you have already applied a texture map, you will have to do that over again.

MultiRes you can use too.
