I have exactly the same problem, with the same "crash message", but I still haven't found any solution, did you?

HMM...same mission, different problem for me.

I get a C++ error (This application has a requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.) when the game tries to save the checkpoint for going into the scientists room.

Seems to me that this level would benefit from a complete debug session back at the developers studio.

I've got exactly the same problem - the same error when saving after going to the hotel room.

I've got:
AMD X2 5000+
2GB PC8400
e-Geo GeForce 7950GT 512MB

It doesn't seem that this issue is being addressed, so I guess I'm out of luck. It's a shame I finally am able to play this game and I only get to play half.

I hope you guys returned it for a refund if you couldn't get it working...

Ubisoft doesn't deserve our business if they can't churn out a working game.

I have a machine with decent specs (which by SC4's standards should be over-the-top) yet the game crashes on any save (or checkpoint save) after the cracking of the safe in the Shanghai hotel.

Another two things about this game that are lame are:
- requirement to install DX9 when you have DX10 or DX11.
- game crashes on start if you have multiple monitors.

Seriously, I hope the Shanghai dev team doesn't get any more jobs from Ubisoft HQ... either that or the people responsible for all the bugs in SC4 are replaced.
