Am I right in thinking the A10 has no radar ?

Am I right in thinking F-16 ground mapping radar is involved in that planes CCIP calculations ?

If so

How does the A10 do CCIP calculations ?
Does it just take altitude, speed, INS readings, bomb drag charactersitics etc and do the resulting geometry ?

Wouldn't it need to do some kind of ground profile out ahead of aircraft as the world ain't
all flat and homogenous, and then calculate intercept between ground profile and bomb profile ?

I may be way off mark with my assumptions and logic so don't be mean. Its just really bugging me.

That's correct, the A-10 has no radar.

You're probably thinking of CCRP though, and yes, it pretty much works exactly the same way you thought it does. Wink

Properly designating a target, however, is going to be all up to the pilot and his Mk I eyeball. A target in defilade behind a hill is going to make it extremely difficult to employ this mode accurately without radar. The pilot has to choose his ingress route to compensate for that and give him LOS on the target for the longest possible time. Smile

From what I read, the original A-10 did not have CCIP.

quote:
The A/OA-10 weapon system was originally designed for manual pilot operation and control. In 1990, the aircraft was modified to incorporate the Low Altitude Safety and Targeting Enhancements (LASTE) System. This system provided computer-aided capabilities including a Ground Collision Avoidance System (GCAS) to issue warnings of impending collision with the ground, an Enhanced Attitude Control (EAC) function for aircraft stabilization during gunfire and a Low Altitude Autopilot system, and computed weapon delivery solutions for targeting improvements. The LASTE computer system installation added the requirement for an Operational Flight Program (OFP) to provide the computer control software necessary to perform the above functions.

Whatever this LASTE thing is, there's got to be a radar or a laser somewhere if it does gunnery calculations and terrain avoidance. Probably in that pod on the right side of the nose, if I had to guess.

Nope, the pod on the right side of the nose is PAVE Penny, it is a laser seeker only...it was also carried by A-7Ds. The rest is all done with inputs from the air data system, radar altimeter, and the INS.

Yes, unfortunately, the A-10 doesn't have much in tne way of an advanced targeting system; even the Pave Penny targeting pod is a purely passive laser receiver without the capability to self-designate targets. It would be nice if they could hang a LANTIRN system on the A-10 (an AN/AAQ-13 & -14), but at this point in the A-10's life it probably wouldn't be worth it; most of the A-10's & OA-10's will be retired by 2010.

Oh...don't be so pessimistic about our beloved Hog either. Wink LANTIRN has actually been combat tested for years on the A-10, and so has the SNIPER XR pod. Its all leading up to the A-10C. Heh...another capability the A-10 has had for years, which LOMAC doesn't model, is QuickDraw for the Maverick. Its been around for years, and the current A-10s have the next AGM-65s seeker slaved and stabilized on the point the last one fired on. This is a HUGE plus to the current LASTE version, a version LOMAC doesn't model. Stitch, have you tried my realistic A-10 loadout mod for LOMAC?

The current, projected retirement date, BTW, is 2028. Smile
