Not interesting huh? Of course not. How can it be? This thread isn't about the F/A-22, F-15, F-16, F/A-18, MiG-29 etc. My bad. Roll Eyes Sad

Gripen International makes a lot of noise about their aircrafts 'swing role' capability being unique......

Due its small size and limmited no of hardpoints, its weapons lugging ability is limmited (Though decent for its size) as compared to say Mirage 2000D or 2000-5 Mk2, MiG-29M etc.

It would be interesting to compare it with similar aircraft (role & price)

Thanks for the links.

It is. It's the only plane that I know of that can perform, fighter, attack, and reconnaissance missions all in one and the same airplane, without any modifications to the original airframe.

You're welcome! Happy

The Gripen is still developing. If we compare it to the F-16(which seems to be the most popular comparison), the F-16A Block15 could carry a payload of 6880kg, whereas the F-16C Block 25 can carry 9275kg(in theory).

Being 2/3 the size of an F-16 the Gripen has a max payload of almost 6 tons already, which is pretty much in the same league as the Mirage 2000. And the Gripen still has plenty of time to develope! Happy

True JAS 39 is a good aircraft for its size.

Having a 6 tonne payload is one thing, having sufficient no. of pylons is another. Due to its size, it has only 4 hardpoints for large A2S stores (wingtips are for AAM only, centerline for tanks, recc pods, under intake for targeting pods etc.)

There are a no of aircraft which can perform A2A and A2G roles with equal effectiveness, and can also cary tactical recc pods like the gripen. These pods are limmited in capability and cannot repace dedicated aircraft such as Su-24MR or MiG-25R series.

I think the best multirole aircraft is the IAF Su-30MKI

That's so cool how the camouflage pattern so closely mimics the light patterns around it. Big Grin

BTW, Robban, I'd better see you start making comments in my Javelin threads or I'm gonna get really upset that you're not interested in my plane. Wink J/K Veryhappy

I just went to the web site and saw some video, looks pretty impressive. You can say what you want about the F35 ( A yet unproven aircraft ) or the f22 again not really proven, It looks like a real 4th generation mulitrole aircraft is here now.

Thou should be spanked for thee remakrs bout the Swedes, they can be lumberjacks for IKEA, strange talking persons or ground techs that don't put rollerons ang guidance fins on Maveriks, but it's all compensated by one thing: Swedish women bow.

The gripen is a nifty plane, similar to the f-16, but more advanced. A shame it gets ignored on the forums, just like the Rafale and the J-10.
