apparently the word has it that when they dropped the one into the ground, it was in the desert, where the dirt is so hard its almost like concrete. It buried itself so far down, that it still remains there to this day. They were never able to get it out.

Yes, the first GBU-28's they built for the original Irag War (1990-91) were manufactured from surplus 8-inch naval cannon barrels; they cut them down to size (about 10' long), half-buried them in the ground, and filled with them with 647 lbs. of Tritonal. The first two bombs were dropped by an F-111F on a bunker complex outside of Baghdad, one scoring a direct hit.
