Show me the proof then, because I sure can’t remember ever saying it. H.W. Edit: A link to the post where I say it would be nice, since otherwise it can be a sentence taken out of context. After all when I say ‘show me where I said it’s a bad game.’ Then this line can be made into ‘it’s a bad game.’ So, a link to the post please. And yes, I really am that confident I never said it. Here's what's bad about the editor
I'm use to the old HoMM editors so I started with a Single Mission (Multiplayer Arena sounds like something for duel mode) and was intending to do something that can be played both in MP AND SP. Now when the map is almost complete, I can't play it on MP P.S. Yeah, I know... I should've read the guide before I started the map... but it wouldn't have solved anything cause I wanted this map to be for MP and SP... |

It is possible to make custom objects for your maps. Look here for an example
This how to do it : - select an object and open its Object Properties Tree(Ctrl+Space) -click the value field of the Shared property and then the "..." button -in the new window you'll see a list an objects on the left and the objects properties on your right(model effects) -If you want the changes to affect only your map make a copy of the object you want in the objects list and modify the copy -if you modify the original object the change will take place in the entire game . |

here is how to fix that, i had the same problem http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/1851065692/m/2781092384 |

Are you sure that the change will take place in the entire game? I think it will be packed as a customized object in the map directory |

The map editor is not realy a map editor. It is a game editor, it is the same software Nival used to develop Heroes V. Nival just disabled almost all functionality not related to map editing.
When you reenable it, it is possible to edit and create campaigns, textures, dialogs, cutscenes combat arenas, terrains, sounds, music... everything. Theoreticaly you can even add new creatures and heroes. |

Eternor,
Is this really the same (but nerfed) editor used to build the game? My impression is that the backend and a subset of the middleware were used, and a new front end was rolled up by a seperate developer team. For example, the "Lower feature only works with size x3 terrain pointer" bug would not, IMHO, have survived long in the context of the game developers' use; easy to fix on the fly when the developers are integration testing their work. Starting from what Eternor said I looked arround the cfg files and look what i've found:
-open heroes_folder/profiles -open editor.cfg -modify the value of setvar map_editor_mode from 1 to 0 - save and open the editor OliverFA the games treats the maps as patches so as long as you have that map in the maps folder the change will take place (with the condition of not having a more recent "patch") |

One can only hope that these functions are hidden exactly because of that, and that these functions are part of the ‘enhanced’ in the ‘enhanced editor’ that comes out when the expansion comes out. This reminds me a lot of those hidden maps that were already in the game on release. They weren’t able to finish them in time (get them to work properly), so instead they hid them. My guess is that soon people will find ways to unlock those extra tools and than, just like with those hidden maps, the question will be; do I really want to use this unfinished part, or do I want to wait until they fixed it properly? Decisions, decisions. H.W. The real intelligence of mankind is not measured in IQ, but in the results of actions taken. |

(Crashing!)
Guys, Since this seems to be the thread with the best discussion of editor bugs, I'll pose my question here. I have a single player in development; the starting positions are done, the underground connection. It was actually fun to play test, last time; some connectivity mistakes let the AI infiltrate my home position before my testing hero got there, which just ballanced out the extra troops I had (intending just a quick run-through to check that everybody got their resources etc). May have been more fun than my intended design :-) But while balked over bridge construction, I took a break to make a quick duel scenario (it's still single player). Two cities, a hill with loot between them, and a winding road connecting all. The cities are restricted to villages and Pillars of Bone, prebuilt. The idea is for two necros to chew their way to the hilltop as fast as they can before meeting. This game crashes at start up. It has two cities, two heroes (defined in various ways, with start positions or, most recently, with hero objects; including names specified in the map objects list). The map checks error-free (I even fixed the "intersection and craig [sic]" things, to get complete error-check approval). There are 16 x 7 x 2 random monsters (234) and two huts of the magi, all in the same group with 3 eyes, and two redwood towers. That's about it. I had tried to build a bridge, so the road could cross over itself, but gave up. There are no scripts. Any ideas what could make the game crash? I made a trivial map, with just two cities and two heroes, nothing else, and that runs fine. And of course my ongoing XL map playtests fine. Does anyone have experience with a map crashing at startup? The first time it didn't crash, there was no hero, just cities. Also, a clue is that when I define player 1 to be race necro, it undefines (but leaves player 2 ok). I had to specify it in the map hierarchy dropdown. Any anecdotes about crashing would be welcome. Thanks, Yoof |

I have similar question. I want to check some things about one still incomplete MP XL map, which I make - some things about the passibility, the positioning of the monsters, etc. The objectives are set (defeat all), 4 of all the 8 future starting positions too, but the map still don't appear in the list of the other MP maps. I haven't connected the surface with the underground yet, but is that necessary?
In short - what do I need to "see" the map among the others? |

In my experimental map that crashes at load time, I got it to load...by deleting the starting heroes, setting both towns to "generate hero in town", and then redefining both the town (town_type_necromancy) and the player race (ditto) over and over again, until they showed up consistently in the object properties.
Now I can load my map! unfortunately it then crashes a few steps afterwards. I'm not able to complete a turn. I've tried twice, once buying a 2nd hero in the town, then it crashed when I exitted the town; once without, it crashed when I tried to move my hero. Yoof |

Euphistopheles can you place a link to the map so i can have a look at it?

OrsonZombie,
Thanks very much for your offer. I don't know a good place to upload a broken map for shared testing, but it's a great idea and maybe we should find one. I'd be willing to look at someone else's broken map, once in a while, if others can do that great courtesy for me. Meanwhile I've sent you my email address via the Private Messaging system here, not that it's really a big secret. Maybe we want to start a Topic for cooperative debugging maps? Thanks very much, Yoof |

Znork,
I donk't think I understand the import of your link. There is discussion there of what folder in the (clientside) directory has maps, but we were talking about an FTP site for exchanging maps with bugs in them? Perhaps if you included a sentence with your link I would know what you have in mind :-) thanks, Yoof |

Heehee. I have the distinct feeling that Znork is very politely asking us to move EVERY topic having to do somehow, in any way, with the editor to the maps forum (to use my simplified name for the forum.)
That would be the perfect to have a ‘help me with my broken map’ topic. Of course, that would still mean that you need a place to upload those maps. But there are quite some places where you can upload files for free. Anyway, the link to the broken map could then be placed in the broken maps topic. H.W.
