For some objects it's possible:
select the object,hold CTRL-key and hold left mousebutton. Then try dragging the mouse around the object.

I believe you can only rotate objects that cover one (1) square. More than one square can only be rotated 90 degrees at a time. Even then, some edge of some objects seem bordered by light blue squares...for what reason, I don't know.
