I got this awesome book about convoy PQ-17, the reasons of its destruction, written from German, British, American and Russian perspectives... In the middle there are lots of photo's, some of which I think belong on this forum. So here we go:
Most famous Russian submarine, K-21, one that torpedoed the Tirpitz and forced it into harbor for repairs, where it was sunk by British Lancasters Same boat returning from a patrol near Britain. Below, this is what happens to boats that return to Murmansk after a winter storm Catalina searchplane searching for scattered ships of PQ-17 remains. Russian destroyers coming out to meet a PQ convoy Most famous Russian destoryer, Gremaschiy (thunderous), responsible for several U-boat sinkings and anti-aircraft defense. A "guard"(very prestigious) flag is awarded to the same destroyer Sailors from the Gremaschiy receive medals. Here is another one, above- Tirpitz in Norway Below, cruiser "Emden" (probably wrong spelling, I read it in Russian) I hope you liked these photos This message has been edited. Apparently Tirpitz didn't notice any attack or torpedo hit, and other sources report the attack as 'abortive'. Good for morale, though.
