I was wondering if there was anybody out there who has been doing sequence breaking or speed runs in this game, kind of like you would do in a metroid game. I realize that it's probably difficult considering that the game forces you to amass large amounts of pearls, which could effectively destroy any attempt at sequence breaking, but I'm hoping that someone has done it. Some ideas I had were (spoilers maybe) getting the jump kit before you were supposed to, getting the spaceship before you were supposed to etc.

I haven't seen any sequence breaking yet, but there's an awesome speedrun that contains full footage of how it was done. Watch it and be amazed: 02:41:09

I watched it like it was a movie, with popcorn and everything.

I know. You gotta see it to believe it. And the most amazing part is, the person who did this speedrun doesn't do EVERYTHING perfect. So there's still room for improvement.

Sequence breaking?

The game's so well balanced that it's ****ed difficult to do so.

The closest I can think of is doing te Alpha Sections bit with General Khek after getting the Beluga.

Okay, I presume you do know about the Darkroom and its Most Wanted List?
http://darkroom.ubi.com/podium2.php

The posted speed-run video is indeed incredible, as we all noted in that original post.

I once calculated the theoretical perfect time: "A little math suggests to me that a completion time of 2'37"54 results in the maximum possible score of 8,000,000." It is in the once-stickied Darkroom FAQ thread:
http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/908103432/.../715105432#715105432

G2B's fast game walkthrough stickied in this forum is one version.

When seb_ze_boss topped the list with his Xbox run, he posted this itinerary on the now defunct French version of this forum (translated with Google):
--------------------------------------------------
Here, without returning in the details, the itinerary which enabled me to make 3h02min48s:
- Lighthouse (without going on the roof)
- Mammago
- Black Isle
- Akuda Bar
- Mammago
- Factory (the way between mammago and the factory is done during the bombardment)
- Akuda Bar
- Races 1 & 2
- Alpha Warehouses (the trick has the exterior of the city)
- Looters Cave 2
- Lair of Vorax
- Mammago
- Looters Cave 1
- Looters Cave 4 (not to forget to take in photograph the manta and the whale on the way)
- Slaughter-houses (in the order: Funicular, Northern Wing, Aile Are)
- Races 3 & 4
- Looters Cave 3
- Akuda Bar
- District Pedestrian (in the order: 2 pearls of Nouri,
handing-over (shed?),
3 pearls Ming Tsu,
Transit,
trick has the door star,
trick has the door triangle,
trick with the door has defoncer)
- Mammago (stabilizing stellar before the Lighthouse!)
- Lighthouse

Following where you are on the chart after defeating the flying snake, there are two possibilities:

- Treasure volcano
- mammago (stellar drive)
- space (whale)
- ultimate safeguard at mammago

or:

- mammago (stellar motor)
- space (whale)
- Treasure volcano (ultimate safeguard)

Voila! First but for how long...
----------------------------------------
Also, an earlier seb_ze_boss post:
----------------------------------------
Veiled, fourth place and a time of 3h14 any pile!
To reassure some, I have the version xbox (and not PC) and one cannot skipper the cinematiques ones.
Small easy ways:
1) not to be caught the tete with the useless things:
mdisk of ming-tzu, detecteurs in any kind, divides AP1...
2) to make "shooting groups":
the various places has pearl of the district pieton can be made in only one blow
not need to go there 5 times to see Ming-tzu
(go ahead only towards the end when it has its three pearls).
To make races 3 and 4 Juste while leaving the slaughter-houses...
3) to reduce the number of saves:
to make a save makes lose the second precieuses ones (let us admit 15s),
multiplies by 40 that made 10 minutes!
4) to photograph the animals at the good places:
the white mouse must be taken in the warehouses alpha and not has the factory.
Not to go on the top of the headlight for the gulls and the otter bipede
(gulls has the black ilot and for the otter it should be waited until the headlight is detruit)
5) There are two more three tricks but I believe to have said some enough
to justify world has reessayer this play genial!
---------------------------------------------------
I forget how, but something about the fast-run sequence causes one of the lighthouse codes to be entered automatically for you (and has been the source of considerable confusion for folks who followed G2B's fast-game walkthrough stickied in the forum, instead of a *normal* walkthrough.) ("Where is the second code?")

I think trying to get your score on page 1 of the Most Wanted List is a great way for old-timers to renew interest in and appreciation for the game, from a little different perspective. I made it sometime back (25th), but eventually got bumped (now 39th).

My technique, though a little slower, was to plan strategic saves before a challenging segment. If you are unsatisfied with a segment, revert to the previous save until you are satisfied, then be sure to save after a good run, and reload to continue. Pausing does not stop the clock.

I have resisted spilling some of these beans before, but at this point, since the speed-run post, there you go, for what they are worth!

Note: The "Challenge" option in the Darkroom simply permits you to search for anyone's score, and compares it to yours.

Okay, you old-timers--where are you on the list? Wink

I upgraded my hovercraft and I made it into the factory, making a photograph of my first rat BEFORE I ever took my first mission on Black Isle. However, I could not proceed into the factory. I've been trying to break the game in other ways, but the game design has taken care of everything.

I hate time attacks, so Speed Runs are out of the question for me. Although I love BG&E, a speedrun is something I really can't do. In fact, I love BG&E so much, that every time I play I just have to stop every once in a while and enjoy the scenery. I take my time in order to stay in Hillys for as long as possible.

I didn't understand that what you meant was running through the game. What I meant is that I was experimenting if I could get something I'm not supposed to get yet, and thus cause chaos in the puzzles and the story.

I think he ALSO meant that.

The thing is that only a person who knows the game very well and has spend enough time with it, can do that kind of experiments.

P.S. Trying to get everything before you're supposed to can also lead to some discoveries - like the fact that you can take a photo of a night vorax in the very beginning (when Pey'J is trying to get in the garage, but there's no electricity).
