Anybody know of any good books?
My summer weightlifting/running class is ending this week & that means a lot of free time and excuse to stay inside instead of exercising.

Yes I do. There's so many great ones. I highly suggest Abarat, a fantasy novel by the master of horror, Clive Barker. It has a female lead living in a world of magic and is in some ways similar to BG&E. It's by far my favorite book ever. Give it a try.

Also, there's Clockwork Orange.

Uh oh, this makes me nervous. Remember what happened last time we had a books thread? *Shudder*

I just finshed Dune this summer. If you're into Science Fiction, it's probably the best book in the genre that you're going to find. Ender's Game is another solid work in the sci fi genre. This Present Darkness by F. Peretti is an excellent fiction work that covers spiritual warfare between angels and demons, very well written.

Well, the best Science-Fiction writer is still Stanislaw Lem. Well, he was.
I would really advise you to read Pilot Pirx and Star Diaries.
"Monday begins on Sunday" is also a book I like reading over and over again, though it is rom different authors, Arkadi & Boris Strugatzki.
Read "HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy" written by Douglas Adams, great book.
And there's still one last book from the Sci-Fi genre I can recommend you: "Starship Troppers" written by Robert A. Heinlein
It's MUCH different from the movie. While the movie is only about shooting, special effects etc. the author writes much about History & Moral -Philosophy.
Unfortunately I cannot advise you any non-sci-fi books because I barely read any.

Oh, I forgot: The Gaunt's Ghosts series. In my opinion the best book of the series is still "Ghostmaker".

If you like fantasy mixed with a tongue in cheek dose of satire and more layers than an onion, check out Terry Pratchett. His irreverent sense of humour is just the thing to brighten your day.
Although more famous for the "Discworld" series he has written plenty of other novels as well, his pastiche of "The Omen" called "Good Omens" is particularly funny and pokes fun at everything from bikers to rock music.

I would also like to suggest The Stand by Steaphen King. Its a little long (nearly 1150 pages long) but once you get hooked you cant stop reading it.
Also I would suggest Velocity by Dean Koontz. I just got done reading it and It was one of the best books I've read this year.

omfg I read the first book. It was spectatular. I have yet to read the second, which has been borrowed from my friend for over a year. >_> Heh. I'll get around to reading it along with the other huge books I have.

I want to see this movie

Dune? Sounds good. Hopefully there is no guy wielding a sword on a horse on the cover; that's the typical Science Fiction cover. Ender's Game... sounds good. & This Present Darkness was in my grade school's library. I always wanted to read it, but it was too thick. D:

Pilot Pirx and Star Diaries... those sound really good. Dunno why... but 'Pilot Pirx' just has a nice ring to it.

Thanks; I really love satires. Slaughterhouse-Five was a good one.

These are good Xmas Vacation books for me; they're in a series and I usually do nothing on Xmas vacation because it's really cold outside and my parents have to work. But I will defiantly look into these.

Hitchiker's Guide... Hopefully I will enjoy it more than the movie... Indifferent

More Stephen King? I've never actually read his books, but I'm assuming they're good going by the reviews you're giving me and how they are pretty popular. I've never been into the whole horror-genre of books, but it's still untapped potential. I tried reading Cujo a few years back but I never got into it.
And one of the best you're read this year? Something definatly to look at.

Thanks people. I'll be busy for awhile.
And, I will reccomend a book:
Animal Farm by George Orwell.
My favorite book... either that or the beginning of The Jungle before the guy leaves his home. That was really good.

For Steaphen King I wouldn't start with his horror books, but rather start with the Dark Tower series or The Green Mile. But all of his books are great.

Okay, because I'm one of those people who used to get freaked out by unsolved mysteries when I was like 8. o_O And -ahem- I have a chair against my closet door whenever I sleep because there is attic access through my closet, and I'm scared of ThEm living in my attic. ZOMG GUAU.

I would also suggest anything by Dean Koontz. He is like a toned down version of Steaphen King, but his books are still great.

Well, I can assure you.
The book is MUCH better than the movie.
I heard the movie got bad critics. Well, I must say that the movie wasn't that bad, in my opinion.
But the book is just much better.

Well, I *was* on an airplane when I saw it (last year, fourteen+ hour flight to Australia) and I would probably enjoy it more if I read the book. The books are always better than the movies.

I've only read Harry Potter 6 during the summer vacation, great story. It was much better than the disappointment of book 5.

Since I'm going to study English Language and Literature, maybe I'll be able to give better recommendations next year.

I've read three of HG Wells' books - The War of the Worlds, The First Men in the Moon, and The Time Machine.
I'm currently reading another of his - The Sleeper Awakes.
I've also read two of Jules Verne's books, but I thought they could be a bit tedious in some places because of Verne's long paragraphs of description (in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, he goes into absolute detail about tonnes of different species of fish).

Ahrgh, no, don't say that. >_<

They completely screwed up that movie. It's such a shame that Douglas wasn't here to make sure they didn't...

But yeah, it's like they made it for quite dumb kids or incredibly dumb adults. None of the wry wit or style from the Radio series, books or TV series was there...

You might not want to read number five, though. The epitome of an anticlimax, I'd say.
