When I first saw Beyond Good & Evil being previewed months ago--just a few screens from before E3--it looked nice, but I didn't care. As more and more shots and information were leaked, I grew more interested, and then I took the time to download a video one day. That was the moment I was hooked. Now, there is no other game coming out this year that I want so badly. What hooked me into the game?
Jade.
The more I watched her, the more I knew that this was a character I wanted to play. Her tomboyish charm, and simplicity of character was stunningly fresh and attractive. I loved the casual nature of her attire, and I absolutely adored her hair style. Jade was the most charming character I've ever seen on the PlayStation 2.
Now that has changed. I hate her new design. She looks like a bad-girl cliche. She looks like every other video game character on the market. Simply put, she looks awful. The new design is garbage.
First point: Her overall design is wretched. She looks mainstream, trendy and cliched. She looks like she would fit right in with Jak & Daxter or with Haven (which was a horrendous game). Her new appearance lacks charm altogether, and I have actually become less interested in the game since seeing her new look.
Second point: I never thought I'd say something like this, but she's got too many polygons. She looks too real. I really loved her exaggerated features: the large mouth and eyes gave her a wonderful expressiveness. She was cartoony, but only to a point. And she was absolutely beautiful. Stylistically, she looked great. Now she lacks style and originality. She's utterly boring to look at.
In summation, there is nothing left to differentiate her from any other video game character. The very thing that had drawn me to the game in the first place--Jade's excellent character design--has not vanished from the game.
And that's not to mention Pey'j. According to IGN, they're going to give him tattoos, chest hair and a wife-beater. I didn't think it was possible, but he's going to look even worse than the new Jade.
Ubi, I am begging you: Please give us back the old character designs. Please restore Jade to her original form. We loved her. She was the most refreshing video game character we've had in years. Despite the cartoony look, she was utterly believable. She was entirely perfect.
At the very least, please include an assortment of character models in the game for Jade and Pey'j, and give the player the option to choose between them. I loved both of the first outfits: the red shirt and "cow spot" pants, and the white shirt and jeans. Both were stunning.
Please please please, Ubi. Say it ain't so . . .

I sent it. That makes it the second time I've emailed them on the same subject; different words, though, and a few different points.
I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Yeah, I don't know if this is some marketing move, but they need to go back to the old one or at least have her age and use the new one at the end possibly. GI JADE...uuugh!

I actually like both pretty much equally, if I had to choose one I think I would probably go with the older one. Are you sure they changed the character design and the screenshots are n't just from different parts of the game?

Jade looks great in the game. Until the end of the game I was still impressed by her face and her expressions. I have not seen more expressive character. ...Of course I hope that in BG&E2 they won't do to her what they did to the Prince.
I know this is an old thread, and I'm sorry for continuing it, but since I haven't been in the UbiSoft forums long enough to reply to this, I'd like to add that I actually like the face of the older Jade, but for the outfit and overall look, the changes they made for the final game were improvements.

Great word, dom1999.
I'd like to point out that I hadn't heard of this game until after the change was made, and I had in fact completed this game before I ever knew that such a change had been done. Seeing it after the fact, I do feel that it was a positive change, as the "new" look fits the feel and style of the game much better. Note that the original post was dated to about 5 months before release. Hopefully that person, whoever it was, looked past appearances and still played it.
