I have recently beat Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. The story for this game was incredible. It's easily one of the best video game stories I have ever heard.

It doesn't require that you play the original TLJ game. I didn't, and the game seemed totally fine. But just the whole presentation of this game is outstanding. It in many ways reminded me of Beyond Good & Evil, from a few similarities of the story, to some of the stealth sequences in the game. And, you may hate me for saying this, but I believe the story in this game is even better than the story in BG&E.

The graphics look great while you are playing the game, and the sound and music are excellent. One thing you should know about the gameplay is that there is a lot of dialogue. But don't worry, it's all voice acted (done very well), and the story really pulls you in to the game.

I recommend this to all BG&E fans, and anyone who likes a game with a great story.

When I read the first not-so-very-positive reviews, the first thing I thought about was the discussion going on here a little while ago about how great The Longest Journey is and how people were looking forward to Dreamfall. I heard the game has gone to much mainstream in the gameplay department, the bad way. What's the deal? I'm in for a good story, is it worth the possibly mediocre gameplay?

I had no problem with the controls as soon as I inverted the mouse. The game has lots of dialogue, but the story is well worth it. I would really call the gameplay a very good transition from a true adventure game to pure 3D. Some adventure fans thought the puzzels weren't complex enough, but they were perfect for me. Some of them give you a good challenge, but they are nothing that you waste a lot of time on.

A lot of dialogue doesn't matter to me, I've lived through the codec conversations of Metal Gear Solid 2. Tongue

Seriously though, the more dialogue, the better, as long as it's interesting. In MGS 2, a lot of conversations were dull.

MGS 2 was wierd. Only a bunch of Japs could have thought it up.

hey, dude... i'm in a magazine design class... give me a review if you can within the next 24 hours or so. short one... like this is for tomb raider legend:
quote:
Lara Croft returns from the ashes of her last adventure, “The Angel of Darkness”. With disappointing reviews, the creators of the orginal Tomb Raider have decided to reunite for “Legend”. The results are amazing. Though not very difficult and quite short, “Legend” more than makes up for it in stunning environments, the equaly stunning new look of Lara, and loads of unlockables. It’s safe to say Lara is back and better than ever!

i wanna put this game in my reviews section but i haven't played it... also a 1-5 rating would be nice (half points ok). if anyone else would like to review it, you're welcome as well. i'll pick the best possibly.

i dunno about this but in TLJ there's a lot of dialog to go thru...i don't really like reading too much...i want to play the game...so that's BG&E i like...i can play straight into action and the story is conveyed thru cutscenes....saves a lot of my eyes on reading those tiny dialog words...

but still Dreamfall is a great game! for readers!!!

Dreamfall is entirely voice acted. The second time I played the game, I turned off the subtitles.

you have convinced me to rent it from gamefly. I'd just like to clear somthing up first, the story of BG&E was pretty repetitve (an alien invasion, and you have to stop it), what made beyond good & evil really good story wise (from my perspective) is the charcters, from the very begining they draw you into the world, and keep you there, its like being in love, though thats a little extreme. Then the charcters went through changes, like at the end, when jade and double H were fighting that thing, I really felt he would have givin his life for her, at that moment, I don't think he would have done that when they first met. As long as a video game/movie has good characters, the plot could be: their returning an overdue blockbuster movie, for all I care. so my question is: are the charcters dynamic, and do they go through changes?

Good call rat_haus, character development is a major key in my book.

How exactly does the game play? i've been turned off from this game becuase it's an adventure game, and based on how the past games were and the genre itself, I can't help but feel like Dreamfall is too adventurey for me, like a myst type of game. I know it's probably not even close, but could you say how the gameplay feels overall? Does it play like BGE, or does it still feel like more thinking than action (may be a bad way to put it... but I've got nothing else.) Basically, if the game isn't a pure adventure, then I think I'll try it out. I'm just not sure if it fits my tastes.

The gameplay isn't exactly like BG&E. For example, there's not a lot of fighting in the game. It's more like exploration and puzzle solving. But, the puzzles aren't really too difficult.

In a way the gameplay is kind of similar to Indigo Prophecy, but without the reflex button mashing. It stands somewhere between a pure adventure game and an action/adventure game, but it leans slightly more towards a pure adventure game.

I'm no fan of pure adventure games myself, but I absolutely loved Dreamfall. It has nice realtime 3D graphics, great music, and an excellent story.

Hmm, from what I've played of Indigo Prophecy, I really like how it worked. Maybe I'll give this game a shot after all.

The first three quarters of Indigo Prophecy in terms of story was ecellent. The last quarter seems way to rushed, unfortunately. Still, overall the storyline and the characters are worth it. The gameplay...well, I liked it. If you like the gameplay in the beginning, you'll like it in the end as well. There's also a character named Jade, and that's always a plus. Clap

Actually, that was rather fun and challenging to me. It's one of the best ways I've ever been able to use the keyboard in a game.

Which reminds me... In Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion, I have a ring. It's a simple ring, no modifiers in any way, and worth a market value of only 30 gold. (cheap) I wear it constantly on my character despite all that. Why? Because it's made of Jade, and because of which is called the Jade Ring. Man, overflowing with geekness/foolishness Wink

OK, guys, I don't have the time to write a review, but I uploaded some gameplay screenshots (with commentaries!) here:

http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/dreamfall-the-lon...-journey/screenshots

Just look at them and you'll get an idea of the gameplay. But the gameplay is just a mask that hides the story.

In a few sentences, I couldn't sleep because of this game, because of the storm in my mind. I have to go to work, so I could play it only in the night. TLJ2 has made me think, it has made me feel - so strongly and deeply, games like this one appear so rarely. This is an interactive story - and it is so amazing, so deep and complex.

Lynx-0-: regarding quests, MYST is the type of games that I dislike. But this is not the only type of quests! The other type has a main character, lots of dialogue, and puzzles, requiring to use objects. Like "Sanitarium" and "Grim Fandango". TLJ2 particularly is more like an action-adventure, but I'd call it, as I said, an interactive movie.
