I noticed that BG&E has been added to Steam, as well as some other Ubi games:

http://storefront.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=app&AppId=15130

I was wondering if they might have fixed it to work on 64-bit systems, but I see this in the system requirements:

"OS: Windows® 2000/XP (only)"

It's a shame that the PC version of BG&E will no longer be playable as PCs move to 64-bit. And worst of all, it's just BG&E's copy protection system that causes this whole problem. I remember I had spent hours studying this problem and trying to find a solution.

I guess our only hope is that virtualization gets better GPU support in the next few years.

- you need a account

- you MUST update
- your personalities arn't save
- maybe steam has sypware

I've been using Steam for some years now and I must say that it isn't bad. All the problems they had at the beginning are long gone and it seems like they are able to handle it not too badly.
I must say that it has its positive sides, because more people will notice it now and probably play it!

1. Of course you need an account, any online distributor requires one...

2. You only need to be online to play the Valve titles...not for anything else.

3. You can turn auto updates off, and even revert updates for anything other than Valve titles.

4. Can't save personalities? I don't even get what this is or what the complaint is.

5. Steam has no spyware. The only thing it has is an optional survey of your rigs specs. It only asks for these every other month, and you just have to click no when it asks.

The only reason to not use steam is if your internet ie awful. Otherwise its a great choice to help get your chance to play some older titles that stores no longer have. I never even knew there was a PC version of bg&e, I am loving this game! (Just got it off Steam) My only complaint is a lot of visual bugs, maybe theres a patch I need.

I was amazed just because I posted a reply in a topic about BGE on Gametap, asking for it to come to Steam.

Well, here it is. Happy Great job, Ubi. Smart decision. Big Grin

*edit*

And I did some poking around on the Steam forums. Some people have come across errors here and there, but it seems that for a lot of people, it does indeed work on Windows XP and Vista 64 bit versions.

Such as me! You just have to tone down the water effects and turn of the first vertex shader. That squashes the bugs that crop up, and it doesn't hurt the game at all, its wonderfull.

Wow, you were right! I purchased the Steam edition of BG&E (which makes the third time I have purchased the game), and I installed it on my computer with Vista x64 and a Radeon HD 3550. I can confirm that it works very well.

However, I had to make a few adjustments in order for the game to work. First, I had to add this registry key. For some reason the game didn't add it itself. I suspect due to UAC.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Ubisoft\Beyond Good & Evil]
"Install Path"="d:\\games\\steam\\steamapps\\common\\beyond good and evil\\"

Note that the "Wow6432Node" part is only needed on 64-bit windows. Also, I had to make some graphics adjustments to fix a flickering problem. I have all the detail levels high, but I had to set the advanced settings like this:

Triple-buffering - no
SSE - yes
HW Vertex Processing - no
Multi vertex stream - yes
Mipmapping - yes
W buffer - no
Fastflip - no
Autogen mipmap - yes

The game looks great and plays great. There is an occasional slow down, but not too bad. It has actually been a while since I played BG&E. I am reminded of one thing: Just how bad I want a sequel!

Great to see some of you enjoying it all over again on Steam, though I should point out that it's only available on Steam to US gamers right now.

I hope it becomes available elsewhere as well, I'd certainly buy the game again especially now that the Steam version (apparently) removed the Tagès copy protection that crippled the original PC version.

I actually play offline with Steam on my gaming rig. I just connect it to the internet every so often to update games and maybe buy and download something. After that I can click the start steam offline button and play all the games without being hooked up to the internet.

I actually recently sold my PC copy of BGE because I was gonna buy it for the GC so I'd only have 1 disk instead of three but now I'll buy it on Steam!

Just buy a couple packs of coke, and use the codes toward a gametap subscription. It's on there.
