I'm looking for suggestions of how to record my movements in Myst. I used to do mapping with graph paper but want to do it in my computer with a writing or drawing program. Perhaps there is software alread set up for this task?
How do you do it? |

At the next link, Jonias talks about the software he used to create his maps.
Look at the text under the Myst island image... Myst Maps |

Wow, those are GREAT images. I'm impressed.
But I'm looking for a more flattened graphical record of moves, such as Channelwood where I am now, so I can keep from getting lost but more importantly track where I've been ( and haven't). Sort of maze tracking. Literaly I used to use graph paper and today have now been playing with Open Office Draw. I don't want to re-invent the wheel so looking for your experience of methods/ideas. |

If you like maps to be flat and simple, have a look at these...click here

I know what you mean Tom, mine are just to get the bigger picture of what's around you without spoiling the game for browsers - not a walkthrough as such. I ot lost in Edanna so often just by turning around that I decided to make bigger pics and they just grew from there.

Boy those are cool, but must have been a lot of work! What program did you use? I've started using Open Office Draw and making sort of a crude line drawing as I begin Channelwood. (don't want to get lost) I'd upload my beginning to get suggestions on better ways, but I haven't figured out how to upload it (Newbie here...) |

Hi Tom,
I did not create those maps. I found them by doing a Google search. They are from the Games site GameBoomers in the walkthrough section/myst/ Maps by Robert Ellison. If ever you would like to post an image(s) here, you will need an Image Hosting Site and use an [IMG ]XXXXX [ /IMG] type URL link from the Hosting site, copied at the Hosting site and pasted in your reply window. I use Photobucket. I beleive it is possible to have a small and limited "free" account with them...http://register.photobucket.com/ It was suggested to us that our images should not be larger than 800X. I do not have a good photo editor. Most people I know who work a lot with images use Photoshop. For some fun see what a friend was able to do on the Mystonline forums.(re: ex Uru Live) KI toons by Thend http://www.mystonline.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=75796#75796 |

First off, I don't think there are any mapping programs like what you are looking for. Using openOffice would work, or any paint program that would allow you to apply a grid as a background. The Gimp is a "Photoshop like" image editing program that is free for those "non pro's" amongst us.

If you apply that grid programme over the trees in Edanna - does it become a Forest Gimp?

Tom, you could create a grid on a piece of paper and use a scanner to create a copy on your computer.
Btw, a cheap landscaping software might do the trick. |

Years ago I used to use graph paper and do hand maps. What I'm doing now is using OpenOffice Draw. I'm not to used to the program yet, but I'm getting by. Is there anyway I can attach a pdf file to show you what I have done? Tom |
||||
|
Tom,
For us to get a PDF file, you would need a File Hosting site and provide us with a link to your file. |
||||
|
OK here goes... I took your advice and got a Photobucket account. I converted my draw files to pdf and then to jpeg and uploaded. Here are the links. I hope this works ;-)) |

Oooops. I thought I was posting links and got images instead...
Sorry Tom |

The link to your last image is...
http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/oo284/TomSKP/Myst/My...elwoodWaterLevel.jpg I found it by doing a right click on the image and checked the "Properties" at bottom. Then I copied the URL address and pasted it in my post. |

Well, anyway, you can see how I'm recording my 'moves'. It's a lot better than a pencil, graph paper and a large eraser, as I can resize and move and correct so much easier in the Draw program. The only pain is having to switch back and forth between Myst and the Draw. I need a second monitor so I could have them always displayed sude by side.
So that brings me full circle to my original question... about the best ways(s) to record Moves...??? I guess I'll continue with what I've done unless I hear a better idea to try. Tom |

Hi Tom, I'm late to the party and forgive me if I have misunderstood what you are trying to do. Are you trying to solve the Myst puzzles by mapping where you have been and what you have done already? I wonder if you should just be playing the game wearing headphones.

You've got to be kidding? <VBG> With my memory I need some sort of map to keep from getting lost and to see where I have not checked. I've evolved into using Open Office Draw as see above. Not perfect, but better than my scrawl on paper. Originally I was seeking how others were recording their moves/finds, to see if there was a better/easier way. Thanks for the follow-up. |
