Well the truth is reality can at times be better.

A company called Aerovironment, which is responsible for the handheld Raven UAV's that the Army uses, has another UAV.

The very cool thing about this drone is that not only is it portable like the Raven, but in addition to the sensors it carries to do recon, it can ALSO be a lethal mini-cruise missile.

It's aptly called the Switchblade!

"Switchblade is another weapon, developed by AeroVironment, Inc. It is designed for hand, tube or aerial launch, and could provide the warfighter with a "magic bullet" delivering 'instant' Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) on Beyond Line-of-Sight (BLOS) targets within minutes. Designed as an expendable system, Switchblade will also have an option to carry a small explosive charge to enable rapid prosecution of selected targets. The miniature, remotely-piloted or autonomous platform can either glide or propel itself via quiet, electric propulsion, providing real-time video for information gathering, targeting, or feature/object recognition"

Don't forget the Smart Hydra Rockets, those will be awesome when the Cobra and Apache get them along with the Spectre.

"It might sound like science fiction to some, but Thomas said that by using 3-D through-the-wall radar, thermal imaging and X-ray backscatter, you can fuse data to create a picture of a building's external and internal structures, as well as detect objects and people inside.

"LIDAR is the canvas on which you can build through-the-wall technologies and other capabilities. We have shown it can be done," Thomas said.

The LIDAR sensor will give millimeter-accurate measurements of things like windows, doorways and alleyways in 3-D.

Everything within the range of the sensors is mapped. Every dot in the image is effectively a reference point and the information is accurate enough to be used for precision targeting of weapons.

Masthead can be carried in the back of a covert civilian 4x4 with only minor modifications, or bolted into the back of a military vehicle. It can also be used in a static, dismounted role."

Thumbs Up

Ok, so Muttbut corrected me in that this isn't US tech, but UK tech. I'm hoping we buy it.

In any case in the meantime we have developed something to help us detect enemies in urban terrain. And the plus side: it's in use now in Iraq.

There's a link if you'd like to see the larger version: http://www.defenselink.mil/dodcmsshare/newsstoryPhoto/2...r_scope-20060103.jpg

""Radar Scope" will give warfighters searching a building the ability to tell within seconds if someone is in the next room, Edward Baranoski from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's Special Projects Office, told the American Forces Press Service.

By simply holding the portable, handheld device up to a wall, users will be able to detect movements as small as breathing, he said"

Darn still the best thread in the whole forum!

Talking about computer ordered tech I confirm the development of that. A couple of years heard of one that worked by using the brain's both hemispheres; when thinking about the colour green a hemisphere was activated and thinking red the same think happened due to colour perception in different parts of the brains. This has such an huge potential.

What about computer controled soldiers? Dr.Lawrence Pinneo managed to remove part of a brain in a primate repacing it with a computer based one making that primate obey the orders given by a computer he run. This was only in the 70's, anyone thinks that the military didn't notice this?

And waht about supersoldiers that don't need sleep? Yale's Professor Delgado was also in the seventies studying the possibility of reducing the necessary time to sleep to about 2/3 hours.

aL they need for that radar now is some fancy attached helemt with a HUD, that would make it so cool.

But it uses radar tech, but if it's this small it can only detect things real close or am I mistaken about that ?

You will not be jugded by your medals or diplomas, but by your scars.

Wow, this is some crazy stuff. Switchblade, huh? That thing is sweet! a UAV which, when needed, can be used as a man portable cruise missile. That's so nuts! That DARPA radar scope is cool too. If I were the badguys, I would be so terrified to face off against a modern military, as lethal as they are today.

Yeah, it's great to have DaCosta back.

Recon, I get my stuff from various websites like DefenseTech.org and also Wired magazine's blog: DangerRoom.

military conferences that I attend almost every year: like AUSA - the Assoc. of US Army

and various magazines that I subscribe to:
Armed Forces Journal
Naval Forces
Military Technology
Defense Technology International
Armada
Naval Institute's Proceedings
Defense News
Aviation Week & Space Technology
NATO's 16 Nations and PFP
ISR Journal
and going to the library I get: Jane's Defense Weekly and Jane's International Defense Review

This is just a neat little material that I recently read about....it's called CarbonX. It's mainly just a fire-proofing material that makes the Nomex(or whatever it was that used to be the "big thing") look like childsplay. It's pretty awesome stuff though, SF guys are already using it as their underwear to prevent any major burns, but they're getting the manufacturer to look into making body armor out of the stuff when their in warmer environments.

Anyways, if you wanna check it out go to www.carbonx.com

Yeah if they deploy the Switchblade widely enough, it will have a HUGE impact for US forces.

Azrael, Carbox X IS pretty nifty. Too bad they didn't have a video.

To Reconning, most libraries WON'T have defense publications, but I am in NYC, so I'm lucky to have access to that.

"Made to be carried by UAVs and Infantry...missile can swtich targets or abort in flight..."

Thanks for the headsup on the Spike. I've read about it before, but have yet to see a video. Unfortunately that Pop Mech, didn't have a pic.

Hi lad's been a while...

anyway

first successful test of the LM led "Fire shadow" loitering munition from the UK, basically you launch these things over a battle space and they stay up for hours waiting to be called in to strike...nifty, this programme is particulalrly impressive because it's only taken 15 months to get from start to test, very fast in the weapons development game...

15months is INSANE....and loitering munitions offers up so many tactical advantages. Just give units authorization to use the missiles when in need, and it's an instant BOOM-maker. You can say bye-bye to successful ambushes, they wouldn't stand a chance with a couple missiles flying above just waiting for someone to poke their head out.
