Hi! I've been experiencing the notorious "memory can't be read" error for quite some time now. I read somewhere on a forum (I think it was on Gamespot) that installing the latest graphic card drives could help a bit. I did that. I started the game, clicked "New game", and waited. For the first time in a very long time I got through the loading process without any errors. However, after walking about a metre (in-game, of course) the game crashed. I recieved an error-message that I've never seen before:

I clicked "ok", then recieved the classical "memory can't be read" message. I started the game again. This time I got an error at the start-up loading screen (before the main-menu). Anyone who have had a problem similiar to mine?

You have set your SoundMAX (with 4 years outdated drivers) as primary, why?! You have an Audigy.


1. Uninstall your SoundMAX
2. Disable the onboard sound in BIOS.
3. Check that now your Audigy is the primary and only sound device
4. Update the Audigy drivers
5. Enlarge and fix the paging file to 4096 min and max.
6. Your drive F:\ is a virtual drive created by disc copying / cloning / emulating software. For obvious reason, Securom copyprotection is against that. UNmount the virtual drive.
7. Defragment your hdd.

Yes, probably because you still have onboard soundchip enabled in BIOS,
PLUS you have the soundchip set as primary device.
When you set the Audigy as primary device (Control Panel > Sound and Audio devices), it will work.

Never mind the above post. I had just forgotten to plug the speakers into the Audigy soundcard :P

I was able to play the game for a while, but at the loading screen after the scene where Menelag dies, the game crashed. When trying to load an autosave, the game crashed too. Before the first crash, I had successfully loaded a basic savegame, without any problems. Now when I load the very same savegame, I get: "Engine Error failed to lock index buffer in CMeshDX8::LockIndexBuffer", followed by the "memory can't be read" message. What's wrong with this game?! Are the developers ever going to do something to solve this (since many people have this issue)?!

You blame the game, but it is your PC.

Make sure the 3D settings in nVidia control panerl are set to "Application controlled" (global settings at default).

You have only 1 GB RAM. Technically that should be enough (tested in my old PC with ATI Radeon 9700Pro), when no other programs are running on the background.
Try this:

Open the registry editor:
Click Start > Run, type in
regedit

then hit Enter.
In the Registry, navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

Double click on "PagedPoolSize". Change the (hexadecimal) Value Data to:
0c000000
This will set pagedpoolsize to 192Mb

Reboot the PC.

No not load old corrupt savegames. Rather start new game.

Thanks, that helped a bit. However, when walking in the caverns, before where you snatch the crystal from that necro-guy, the game crashed. Now I got an other error that I've never seen before:
