I have played this game b4 on this computer. The only thing different is i upgraded my video card to 8800gt. When i start the game it runs fine, shows the intro cut scene then when it gets to the main menu the screen goes black. It dosnt freeze or crash. I know that i am at the menu cus if i push the up and down buttons i can hear the noise it makes as it goes to next option. Plays sounds and music fine as well. I have both of the patches installed.

Possibly because your monitor's native resolution 1680x1050 isn't supported by the game.

To solve this, you'd need to change the game's settings before you run it. To do that, edit the registry key
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Source\mm]
(if it is already created).

Tell me if it has not already been created, in which case you can manually (otherwise you'd have to change your monitor's resolution).

Then again try if the game's automatic setup (that is before the first run) proceeds untill you get the "Adjust Gamma" screen.

I tried every resolution that my monitor offers, no change. Why would changing the resolution on my monitor make the game work, if every time i start the game, the game changes the resolution again?
