Running in XP SP2, everything is far above requirements and I have latest drivers installed properly for everything.
I got crash-on-startup errors when playing from the DVD install and then from the Steam install. So I made sure to completely uninstall DM DVD and Steam, used CCleaner on the registry to catch old reg keys (although there could possibly still have been something), and reinstalled from Steam (ugh) - same error. Starting from Steam throws up the mm.exe error, and starting from the SteamApps directory throws up a bink32.exe error. I've checked out various other topics and while I have ideas it seems like I could make the problem worse by haphazardly copying things around and hoping the paths would be fixed. What concerns me is that the self-help thread indicates that confusion about which installation to use is causing the problems...but I wonder why that would happen in a 100% Steam installation? |

Hello Ed_Oscuro. No worries, just follow the DARK MESSIAH Installation and Troubleshooting Instructions exactly.

I did - it's still not working.
I don't see any description of the mm.exe issue when working from a 100% Steam installation. Edit: I've uninstalled Steam, cleared out the Temp folder, deleted the Ubisoft and Valve registry keys, and I'm installing from Steam yet again. If it doesn't work this time I think it's safe to say there's absolutely nothing more I could be expected to do... |

Alright. I've tried everything. I just got finished downloading single player and multiplayer via Steam, and it's back to crashing.
Interestingly, there's no registry entry for \Valve\Source\; just others for Valve\ (i.e. Half-Life, which isn't even installed, and Steam, which includes the subfolders Active Process, Apps, Beta, Steam.exe, and Users. So yeah, I tried all that stuff out and nothing worked. |

Bump - I've come to the conclusion that my old desktop XP installation is bugged somehow, although I'm not able to easily rectify this situation at the moment (time to get a new hard drive for installing XP). This is odd because I've done very clean installs of the latest nVidia drivers (using DriverCleanerPro), but I still get some odd issues in various games at times. Other Steam games work perfectly, though. Ah well.
On the bright side, the game installed and worked perfectly on my new laptop - it even seems to do 16:10 widescreen correctly, which is very nice considering when the game came out. All that's left are some small troubleshooting issues, as the textures on one type of enemy suddenly looked very poor. But on the whole it has a nice frame rate even at 1920x1200, and it's fun. |

We can try to fix your problem on the desktop PC only if you post the details first:

Oh, sorry, there isn't currently any pressing issue with the game. I believe I need to do a fresh install on that other PC sometime, that's all. Just saying thanks for the help
I don't want to waste your time so I'll be heading off to General Discussion now. When (if) I do reinstall XP on that desktop (other machine), I'll try DM again on it. |
