I downloaded this game through Steam recently and I'm having GOBS of trouble getting it to work. I think I've been able to play for an extended period of time all of once, and quite frankly I'm getting fed up.

The most prevailing issue (or at least the one I meet most often) is on start up, the game blinks from the Ubisoft screen all the way to the menu (if it doesn't crash to desktop first) showing the videos frame by frame until it gets through. The only way I've found that gets around this is deleting my local files then launching the game, letting Steam re-download them or whatever it does every time. This sometimes fixes things. Sometimes it happens anyway.

If I do get through the intro videos, the next most common place for crashes is the screen that loads the menu. The little bar creeps across until eventually I hear the windows error sound and everything stops. It doesn't 'crash' per se but it doesn't go any further. Ever.

Any suggestions? I doubt it's my computer since I'm running CoD4 with no problems whatsoever, but I'll post my msinfo here shortly.

Well it IS your computer (that is: it's condition).
Possibly you need to install the AMD dual core hotfix; possibly your Steam version is corrupted (happens when it's too old) and needs reinstall;
you should update your Audigy drivers, and set the hardware acceleration to full;
update your nForce4 drivers;
seeing that you only have 10% free diskspace (which is below the 15% line for stability) it is of utmost importance you have the hdd defragmented,...

And how old is your Steam installation?
1. If it was installed before March 2007 i advise to backup your game, then completely uninstall/reinstall Steam latest version. See DARK MESSIAH Installation and Troubleshooting Instructions [POST 4] item =3= and follow instructions to the letter! Also make sure to apply "verify integrity", and "defragment local files" option in Steam > My Games list > DMMM . right-click > Properties.
Try that first.

2. If your Steam isn't that old, or reinstall did not help, anyway apply "verify integrity", and "defragment local files" option in Steam > My Games list > DMMM . right-click > Properties.

3. Next step would be to install the AMD dual core hotfix: DARK MESSIAH Installation and Troubleshooting Instructions [POST 6] item =36=.

4. Create free space by deleting files to have at least 15% free space on C:\, and defragment your hdd. See DARK MESSIAH Installation and Troubleshooting Instructions [POST 2], try Diskeeper Lite.

5. Make sure the hardware DX level is set to DirectX9.0+ by applying the
-dxlevel 90
parameter onto the shortcut, launch the game, check that it is applied, quit the game, then remove the parameter again, as described in DARK MESSIAH Installation and Troubleshooting Instructions [POST 4] item =2=.

Tried everything you've recommended so far. Nothing has helped. Reinstalling Steam helped at first, everything ran fine. The second time I went to load up the game, however, it was back to normal. Normal being 'I can't get through the Ubisoft screen.'

1. Your DirectX files show the same files twice, 2006 and 2007 versions instead they should be only the 2007 ones, replacing the old files

2. Update your nForece4 drivers, start HERE

3. Update your Creative Audigy drivers {02.09.0016 (39.37 MB) 9 Oct 06}: HERE.
After you have done so, enable the hardware acceleration on your sound[b[card[/b] (you disabled it before, so you know how to enable it).

4. Make sure systemprotection- and antivirus applications are disabled (or reboot without).
Try: Start > Run... type in:
msconfig
click OK.
On startup items tab, untick ALL items. Then reboot the PC.

After all this, of course make sure the hdd is defragmented and tidy again.

My graphics card is a PCI-Express version.

So what happens now that I've tried all that and it still won't get past the Ubi screen smoothly without cleaning out the local files?

Hmmm. reinstalling Windows?

Hmm. Pity, looks like I'll just have to eat the money I spent. Maybe I'll try again when/if I reformat for whatever reason, but there's no way I'm reformatting for one game.

You don't seem to be prepared. Windows can so easily become currupted it isn't funny. In fact you would not format and reinstall for a game, but to get a 100% cleaned up and reliable Operating System.

With being prepared i mean that you should have at least 2 partitions:
Windows on C:\ and all your data on a second partition or harddiskdrive.

Btw: you should update your Audigy drivers to Oct2006 version, HERE.

... Thank you for chastising me for not being willing to reformat at a moment's notice. Your suggestion might be a good one for someone who makes a habit of deleting important dll's or getting himself infected with viruses, but to anyone fairly computer literate, it is remarkably hard to get Windows to a point where you NEED to reformat to run a year-old game when you otherwise meet the requirements.

If something minuscule truly has gone awry that only effects Dark Messiah and none of my other, more recent, games, then I will be able to enjoy this game when I reformat for other reasons. There is little to no chance of me reformatting exclusively to run a $20 game I bought on a whim.

I do find the lack of "Sorry we couldn't help you" disturbing, but I guess this hasn't been a complete loss. I did get to do a lot of maintenance I've been meaning to do for a while.

So far i found your responses to my suggestions that poor it seems you are not very comfortable with a computer. Otherwise, a corrupted DirectX you should have noticed before or have reacted adequately to my posting. And sofar i have seen no "thank you" for my willingness to help you. I wouldn't call that disturbing 'cause i'm used to that on forums more or less...
