I started playing Dark Messiah about 6 months ago... completed the story mode a couple of times... Then I left it alone... Didn't play it for a few months...

Last week I decided to go back and have another blast... so I hit the shortcut... The ubi screen pops up... then freezes... WTF???

No biggy I thought, just back up the game saves and reinstall...

I've reinstalled the game and both updates about 7 times so far...

After reading a post by Blind Nero I realised I don't need to install the updates... The dvd I'm using is already version 1.2...

So I'm uninstalling as we speak... going to have another go... Without installing the updates this time... Fingers crossed...

What I don't get is why did it stop working in the first place??? I perform regular maintenance, I haven't upgraded/changed any of my hardware, I keep my drivers up to date... My system is up to date... I'm baffled...

EDIT: I've reinstalled... I've not patched (don't need to it's already included on the DVD)... First thing I notice that works... It doesn't ask me to insert the correct DVD anymore... It realises the DVD is genuine now...

Still have the exact same problem though... The ubi "tunnel" screen comes up, freezes, makes a load of horrible noise, screen goes black, comes back on, makes more noise, goes black again, and so on...

I've been fiddling with computers for years, and this looks like a soundcard conflict to me, but I've played the game fine before on this very system... I don't use a soundcard, I'm using the realtek onboard, with latest HD drivers...

I left it flicking between the black and ubi screen to see if it would pull itself together... after about 5 minutes (give or take - I was making a brew at this point) I noticed that the app had shut itself down, and I was back on desktop, with the realtek audio manager saying I had just plugged my headphones in, which I hadn't... I clicked OK, it popped back up saying I had just plugged them in again, Ilicked OK... and nothing... All my other games work flawlessly (apart form all the bugs that can be found in any Ubi game), and this one should do... I'm truly stumped...

I did have steam installed, but this time I installed the single player only, and uninstalled steam and playlinc...

I've tried changing the resolutions to ones that are "supported" (although when I originally played it, it had no problems running at 1280x800 a 16:10 res)....

I've tried with SLI enabled/disabled, no difference...

OKaaaayy... For some reason editing my previous post isn't working...

Definitely a sound issue now... Since the last time I installed the game I've lost all sound... will reinstall the latest drivers... if that doesn't work, I'll try the previous version... If that doesn't work I'll have to reinstall my Audigy 2 ZS... Prefer the onboard though

EDIT: Reinstalled current drivers... everything ok, including other games, untill I try to start Dark Messiah... The game does not want to work, it keeps telling me that I've unplugged my headphones and plugged them back in for some reason

Other things I've done...

Complete scans with NOD32 (on maximum kill anything remotely dodgy settings), spybot, adaware, kaspersky online scanner... All clean.
Freed up space on all HDDs, defragged and ran scan disk...
Cleaned and defragged the registry.
Ran memtest x86, no errors.
Tried installing the game to 2 different drives.
Tried earlier forceware drivers (177.39/177.41/177.89 - currently using 178.13).
Tried earlier realtek HD audio drivers (1.95 - currently using 2.05).
Updated motherboard drivers and XP.
Setup NOD32 to ignore mm.exe.
Disabled firewall and AV completely.
It's not an overheating problem, (my CPU never gets above 44 under full load - even when I'm running overclocked which I'm not at the minute)

All to no avail... Ubisoft at it's best eh?

I haven't tried unplugging my logic 3 dual analogue pad (only just remembered this causes problems with some games)... So I'll have a go at that... I can also try pulling out 2gb of my RAM (XP only recognises 2.8 of the 4 I've got installed anyway, but as I've said previously, the game ran fine before), and if I get really desperate, I'll try pulling one of my graphics cards (although I don't believe either of them are at fault).

Is there any chance the game's trying to use more than one of my audio codecs? If it is that would explain why it's conflicting with my onboard sound, but I don't think my codecs have changed in the last 6 months... Which brings me back to WHY HAS IT STOPPED WORKING?!?!

2nd EDIT: Just been having a closer look at my DXdiag... Found something I know nothing about...

What the hell is "Frame Eater,0x00200000,1,1,wmm2filt.dll,2.01.4026.0000"

I've googled it, and the only things I can find refer to software that reduces FPS... The only thing remotely like that, that I've installed is the dual core optimizer from AMD????

You're making things much too complicated.
Uninstall NOD32, as it is one of the antivirusscanners that consider mm.exe a virus. Allowing it could be not effective (not sure). You should have no antivirus program running at all when installing an application.

UNplug "logic 3 dual analogue pad" because the game is mouse + keyb only.

I never heard of "frame eater".

You installed from DVD then uninstalled Steam. That's the wrong way around.
Uninstall Steam (and delete the [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Source\mm]
key from registry) and the game both completely.

Then defragment, and reinstall the game.

Disabled NOD32, even though I've been using it for years and had NO problems whatsoever previously... NOD32 DOES NOT detect mm.exe as a virus, even with direct scanning of the file on maximum security settings, don't know where you heard that?

Turns out logic 3 pad was unplugged anyway... So I uninstalled the drivers and tried again...

I uninstalled steam, the game, then cleaned the registry (deleted all valve, steam, mm references, including the one you mention), THEN reinstalled the game... Didn't install steam the last time I tried installing the game... (my bad, wasn't clear in previous post)

Already defragged before I installed last time around...

Forgot to mention, disabled hardware acceleration on the audio, makes no difference... apart from making it harder to hear people sneaking up on me in other games...

Checked both of those threads, nothing relevant that I didn't already know unfortunately...

In my event logs the only reported application errors since I tried playing again; both yesterday (none today): one instance of fault nvcplui.exe, module nvgames.dll, and another of demo32.exe (caused by me killing the process prematurely).

Figured out what the frame eater was... just some nero BS... removed...

Anyways... uninstalled game, NOD32, adaware, spybot, peerguardian, and disabled windows firewall... Turned off audio hardware acceleration again, defragged, rebooted... Re-installed game (DIDN'T install steam, or that playlinc BS) Rebooted again just to be sure... Game still doesn't work (even tried setting half a dozen different desktop resolutions just to be sure)... Getting fed up now...

Note: this is an old solution from history (old thread). Maybe latest 17x.xx + drivers fix this as well. I can't test this myself (don't have the card) so depending on feedback.

Thanks for trying to help... Fixed the problem... not by any of the ways described in this thread so far though... And guess what? The problem was me being a numpty

In one of the links you posted, I noticed a bit that said to leave the nvidia control panel application settings to default...

Thing is... I never changed the application settings... I did however change the global settings to high quality mode... Changing the global settings back to default seems to have fixed it (It's started anyway) So I'm off to play...

EDIT: Who says 16:10 Resolution isn't suported???



It might not like tabbing out, but I'm getting about 35-125 fps with these settings (I could probably put Anisotropic filtering up to X16, but It's good enough as is, and some of my games lock up when I push it that far )...

The only other problem is the missing menu at the start of the game, but the in game menu works fine, so I'm happy with that

OH>>> This is WITH NOD32 reinstalled, updated, maximum security settings, ignoring nothing... Along with peerguardian running (it only blocks IP's from connecting, not processes) Spybot and adaware agents are running again... everything is peachy again...

Just goes to show Nod32 is game friendly (which I always knew anyway), and always has been... If you have experience of nod32 finding a virus in one of your games, it's because the file nod claimed was infected, actually WAS infected...

"16:10 not supported", says the game's readme. It might work for some time, but at certain places in the game suddenly refuse to work... so then you know what to do. The missing menu at start could be an indication already.

Peerguardian was mentioned by other users and various game's readme's. I'm happy that it is apparently no real issue then.
NOD32 being (or having become) game friendly, and you running the game with it active... that's good news!
