I just can't seem to get Dark Messiah working.

Heres the situ: I have played DM with my old Geforce 6600, with patch 1.01, and while having the occassional crash, on absolute minimum settings it ran fairly smoothly and I got pretty far.

I have recently treated myself to a Geforce 8800 GTS... and had the thought that "hey, DM should run like a dream for me now" and so went through the process of reinstalling it.

No such luck. The game crashes at random, usually either giving the mm.exe error, or just going black and locking up the system, almost always during loading sequences where the progress bar is displayed.

I have tried everything suggested in the Installation and troubleshooting instructions. I have defragmented, reinstalled DM repeatedly, updated my audio drivers to the latest, and tried a number of Nvidia driver versions, including:
158.22
165.01 Beta as suggested (blue screen of death on trying to run DM)
162.18

The last seemed to at least get the game started into the tutorial, but as soon as the transition to stonehelm started to load, the game crashed to black and locked up my system.

I find it utterly shocking that a game with such bad compatibility issues was released for public sale, and that almost a year after release the issues have still not been resolved. When hundreds of other games with similar requirements can be run successfully and stably with only few compatibility issues, one expects not to have to overhaul your entire system just to get one game to work, and I feel that having forked out for the game, we should be entitled to a certain level of quality. This is all the more frustrating for the fact that I used to be able to play the game after a fashion on my old card, but with my new one the game refuses to cooperate.

For clarity:
I have installed DM Single player, patched manually with 1.01 and 1.02, more times than I can remember

I would greatly appreciate any help that could be offered, as despite being thoroughly demoralized by this issue, and will be giving serious thought to whether I will be purchasing any further Arkane releases until they are cleared as playable, I really do enjoy this game, when it is running properly, and would like the opportunity to finish it.

utterly shocking that a game with such bad compatibility issues was released for public sale
Umm.. why did you buy that card and NOT read the release notes with the nVidia drivers?

ATTENTION (from the 162.18 release notes):

from this page: http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_nf4_win2k_6.86.html

2. Disable the hardware acceleration on your soundchip.

3. See DARK MESSIAH Installation and Troubleshooting Instructions [POST 2] for details.
See also [POST 6] =27= and =30= for issues involving GF8800.

I only upgraded to that driver level as a last resort, since none of the others worked at all. I was indeed aware of the issue, but decided to try it anyway since I was running out of options.

Quite frankly, I'm not about to let one game with shoddy compatibility code influence all my other gaming when it comes to choosing a graphics card, which runs my other games quite happily, high end heavy duty games included.

I'll try those options, and hopefully they'll work. Thank you.

I still find the fact that such measures are even necessary as being a rather irksome attempt to pass the buck. Surely the game company should fix the issues so that these measures are not necessary on the part of the user?

What about John Doe who just wants to play a game and doesn't know the intricacies of fine tuning settings?

The game is great... but the framework that supports it needs serious work, in my opinion.

I fully agree.

Antialiasing Problems With Certain Applications
Antialiasing in the NVIDIA Direct3D driver requires each new frame to be
rendered from scratch. This requirement adversely affects applications that
render only that portion of the content that has changed since the last frame. A
common symptom of this problem is geometric structures that incorrectly
disappear and re‐appear as the scene shifts.

Application Issues
• General Antialiasing Problem with Top Games
We have found that some games running under Windows Vista enable 16x coverage sampling antialiasing (CSAA) when 4xAA is selected in the game menu, resulting in deflated performance on GeForce 8800 cards.
The problem occurs with NVIDIA Vista drivers 100.54 and later.
The same effect will occur in future Release 100 Windows XP drivers.
Affected applications found to date include:
• Battlefield 2
• Battlefield 2142
• Sin Episodes
• Half-Life 2
• Half-Life 2 Lost Coast
To set standard 4xAA in these applications, please set 4xAA in the game, and also enable “Enhance the application” antialiasing mode with a 4x antialiasing setting in the NVIDIA graphics driver control panel.
We are working with developers to implement better in‐game CSAA support. You can see CSAA menu selections in Half-Life 2: Episode One and Supreme Commander.

Hopefully it is fixed by now, with the latest drivers!

In the game's Options > Advanced settings > Video, you probably upped the settings because you expected your card should be able to handle that. But strangely enough, GF 8800 series has a problem with high anti alias in DM. Keep the anti alias at 2x max (or disable it completely).
If you can't launch the game to make the changes, see [POST 8] article =7= (I need to change my settings but the game does not load at all so i cannot even reach the Options menu).

--> NO such issues on my ATI Radeon X1900XT512, Radeon 9700Pro, and also luckily not on my GF 7800GT256.

Out of interest, the graphics settings I'm using for DM are the absolute minimum. Everything on low or disabled, depending on what's available.

EDIT: Interestingly, on the latest drivers I did not experience flickering on my weapon during the tutorial, but since I couldn't get far enough to obtain a magical weapon, I can't be sure that is not where the problem arises.

I tried those options you suggested and upgraded my nforce drivers... alas, no luck. It still crashes out on transitions and loads.

I'll try dig up some older drivers or something... thats all I can think of. The beta drivers bluescreen my PC without even getting into the game, so... dunno.

Could you post your settings export? Described in Instructions thread [POST 19].
Just to check if you don't use an unsupported resolution ingame.

Sure thing. It seems I can now get the game to load into game by using ALL lowest settings, and it plays a bit, but as soon as I hit a transition, it crashes. plus its gawdugly, and you'd thing with an 8 series I'd at least be able to use HDR... but alas not. If I move any single setting up even one notch, the game crashes out on load.

Yes that's lowest settings, standard resolution.

Don't forget your CPU is below the system requirements for DM.
quote:
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1.8GHz
nevertheless, from your description it seems your system is overdemanded by other processes... have you tried the minimalistic startup? All unneeded items disabled in msconfig?
