Hello,

I'm using a x1950pro 512mb pci-e card, and I can't seem to enable HDR lightning.
Under video options it says "hardware DirectX version: 6" which is obviously not correct, since my graphics card supports DirectX 9. The software DirectX version is set to 9.
So, has anyone experienced a similiar problem, or does anyone have any idea as to why the game detects the wrong DirectX version? And yes, I have installed the latest DirectX version.

Which brand is the card, is it new, did you build it in yourself, and have you connected the extra powercable? And what PSU (brand,type) do you have?

If you don't connect the extra pwr cable the PC does not start up!
Check your drivers, and if you upgraded from another ATI card check you've uninstalled all your previous drivers properly.
You shouldn't install any DirectX whatever, since Windows upgrade it's enough...

yeah, I was thinking it might be the drivers... Although there's something that confuses me, you see, the driver I have installed is the bioshock hotfix, "ati_8.401.1_bioshock_hotfix", DxDiag on the other hand says the driver version is 6.14.
Also, when I'm about to uninstall the current driver I'm asked whether to uninstall the primary or the secondary driver(or both). In the unisntall window it also says that the driver version is 8.411.0.

So what do I make out of this?
The version I can download from Ati is 7.10, perhaps I should just go with that one?

I got the same vcard.
Now I'm sporting 7.10, but I never had any issue even with 7.6 and later.

Ummm... the Bioshock hotfix was an addition to Cat 7.8. Since 7.9 it was included. Uninstall what you have right now (primary and secondary of course), and install 7.10.

Hmmm... I uninstalled the driver(yeah, I cleaned up the registry keys and all that) and installed 7.10, unfortunatley the issue remains. The game still detects the hardware DirectX level as 6.0

Right now I'm clueless...

Select Option 1, that includes CCC (Catalyst Control Center) >>> Catalyst Software Suite.
Do not install it yet!

Then uninstall your old ATI drivers:

Removing Old ATI Software

• Click on Start, then Control Panel, then go to Add/Remove Programs.
  
• At the top of the list you should see several ATI entries.
• Select the entry entitled ATI Software Uninstall Utility, and click Change/Remove.
  
  
  
• ONLY If you don't find any of those entries for instance because your current drivers are very old or you are using Windows XP-generic ATI drivers, use cat.uninst.exe. Download cat-uninstaller.zip, unzip, run the tool.
  
• You will be prompted to restart your system once the uninstall is complete.
  
• During reboot into Windows, CANCEL all Windows messages about 'found new hardware'!!!
  Because you are going to install the downloaded drivers package.
  
• Once restarted, check the Add/Remove Programs list again for any remaining ATI software.
• If any ATI software is still listed, click Change/Remove on those entries to uninstall each one individually.
  
• Next, please scroll through the list until you find an entry called DAO (see screenshot above).
  
• Select DAO, then Click Change/Remove to uninstall this program.

Then install the Catalyst you just downloaded.

Ok, I did it like you explained except for uninstalling "DAO" (I also cleaned up with CCleaner and RegCleaner)... I'll re-do it and uninstall that one aswell this time.

EDIT: I noticed now that there's no entry named DAO in my add/remove programs list :S

So... Any other ideas? No file i can edit to force the game to use HDR?

You would not NEED to edit any file, your card should handle it right away. Let's keep focused on the drivers, could you post your dxdiag please?.
