I'm getting the

error that i've seen many times while looking through these forums for a solution, nothing seems to have worked. I've lowered my settings, my system meets the spec, I've got the latest drivers and DX9 (I think) and I'm still crashing every few minutes after i start up.

Hi.

1. Update your X-Fi drivers. See DARK MESSIAH Installation and Troubleshooting Instructions [POST 2].

2. Apply DirectX9.0c hardware support by using the
-dxlevel 95 parameter
Follow the steps exactly (remove the parameter afterwards etc) described in DARK MESSIAH Installation and Troubleshooting Instructions [POST 4] error =2= (scroll a bit down).

Your settings seem OK. They are pretty low, but you have only 1 GB system RAM (2 GB recommended for higher settings)

Thanks for your response, I'll try those things now. I normally have my settings a little low for performance, being a bit short on RAM, but they're extra low because I read somewhere that using medium settings could bypass this error. Will post an update shortly.

Unfortunatley, despite your advice, i'm still having the same problem, crashing to desktop with the usual error message.

Try deleting the whole [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Source\mm\Settings] key.
It will be recreated when you launch a new game.
Do not touch any setting and try playing.
I noticed that with dual CPUs it's better having 2Gb RAM.
But my nephew ended the game in 3 days with a similar PC (P4 3Gb, 1Gb, nVidia 6600GT AGP, Asus barebone P4) and without any game patch installed, last christmas.
Try uninstalling your Creative, just to see what happens. (I hate Creative)

I have the X-fi. Don't uninstall it, it is magnificent card and no problems.

Deleting the key (so it will be recreated) is always fine, and could help.

Start the PC up without unnecessary programs, ie unneeded items unticked in msconfig.
Disable antivirus and systemprotection programs before running the (any) game.
DEFRAGMENTING is important, try that. Use a thrird party, like Diskeeper Lite (freeware), see link in the Instructions thread [POST 2].

I've deleted the key and defragmented using DK Lite but still no luck. Im running out of hope here, any more ideas?

The very first time you installed it at least?

I had the demo a few months back and had no problems with it at all, when I installed the demo again last week I was having this same issue. And no, the game has had this problem from the start.

Im using the DVD version and have never had the steam version. Im considering a reformat anyway so if all else fails, that might help.

Just a screwdriver and you're done in 5 minutes.

Or borrow 1 Gb RAM from a friend... (further 5 minutes, pleadging apart)

@ Fender3D: please stop about the X-fi; it causes no problem whatsoever; in the contrary, it's infinitely better to have it than onboard soundchip.

@ BlaqkDraven: Oh but you still have the demo installed? And it is on Steam? Uninstall the demo. Make sure the binkw32.dll is where it belongs (see Instructions thread [POST 4] error =1=)
